July 11, 2024: NFC South

And here is our nominee for the worst division in football… the NFC South is up next. Hey, Baker revived his career in Tampa, and actually notched a playoff victory over the defending NFC champs; bravo! Meanwhile, the Panthers pick at QB didn’t pan out like the Texans; he has to be better right? Meanwhile, the Falcons signed AND drafted a QB, creating an interesting dynamic in Atlanta. Finally, the Saints… Derek Carr??? I guess anybody can pull this one out??? Except the Panthers, right?

Baker got paid. He did have a very good year, but does that mean he’s officially back? Well, the Bucs think he is; having Mike Evans on your side helps. Godwin isn’t too shabby either. Do we give any credit for Mayfield’s revival to the OC? If so, he’s gone… yet not too far away, coaching within the division at Carolina. Does this mean good things for Bryce Young? Time will tell.

The Falcons are the most interesting IMO. Kirk Cousins welcome to the ATL; he’s a great (regular season) QB. Doesn’t he have like horrible numbers in prime time too? AND he won’t have Justin Jefferson to throw to any longer. But, the Falcons needed to do something, and if this signing doesn’t work… they had the surprise of the draft when they took Michael Penix in the first round; he’ll learn under Cousins, at least for a year, right? Say what you want, but the Falcons have surrounded the QB position, which is a pretty good move; having Bijan in the backfield is beautiful, regardless of how RBs value is currently viewed. The Falcons did have a pretty good defense last year. I think they can win this division, no doubt.

The team that will NOT win this division is the Carolina Panthers. Thank you again for all those draft picks AND for finishing last again last year; we will never forget you. Bryce Young wants to forget his rookie season though. Like I already said, he can’t get worse… and with the new head coach and OC, maybe we’ll see some improvement; not a whole lot of talent around him though, plus they lost some talent on D. Another long year on tap, even if they do exceed the 2 wins from last year.

The Saints are about to become the Aint’s again. I did like Derek Carr once upon a time, not so much any longer. There’s just not a lot to like about this team, unless you’re still holding onto Kamara; I’ll never forget his 6 TD performance to give me my fantasy football title. Olave is nice; Michael Thomas? They are returning all 11 starters on defense, where they ranked 8th in points allowed, so there is that. Still, think they’ll be looking up at 2 other teams in this division.

OK, we’ve been west, east, and south… only one direction (& two divisions) remain. Let’s head north…
