Some good baseball news to report for a change. Anthony Rizzo and Chris Sale were both voted in to the All Star game on Thursday, and rightfully so. This ensures that the 4 best players in town are going to Minnesota on Tuesday. We’ve talked in length about the duos on both sides of town, and they have been justly rewarded.
Sale would have been the biggest snub. How he did not get in prior to the final vote is beyond me. Yes, he did have a DL stint during the 1st half of this year, but he still pitched as many innings as Clayton Kershaw, and I believe he is starting in the All Star game for the NL. Yes, he’s not as highly publicized as Clayton, and I’m not going to go as far as saying he’s better than him, but he’s right there. This is coming from a Cubs fan, so it’s definitely not biased. For my money, Kershaw may be the ONLY pitcher I pick over Sale if I had one game to win. When he is healthy, there are not many better. Just imagine for a second Sox fans, a wild card berth. That one game wild card playoff… yeah, Sale is on the mound, and yeah, you’re moving on. He is an all star without a doubt, and I’m glad he got in, regardless of the route it took.
Big Anthony deserved the berth as well. He has taken the next step this year for a Cubs team with currently only one other offensive weapon. The numbers that he has put up in this lineup are outstanding. Can you imagine him on a team with a few other weapons? Hopefully that will be the Cubs before the end of the year, or at this rate, at least next year. I think he will be manning 1B for years to come on the north side. For good measure, he hit 3 HRs SINCE he found out he was on the final ballot. Yes, I am definitely biased with this pick, but I think, and enough other people thought, that he was a deserving all star. I’m glad he got in, and look forward to the Cubs surrounding both him and Castro with some more weapons. I yearn for the day when the Cubs are an offensive juggernaut…

We got a sneak peek in yesterday’s game. Arismendy Alcantara… the kid definitely needs a nickname, was called up to replace Barney, who went on paternity leave. Take a few more days Darwin. One of the Cubs prospects (It’s great to have this load of prospects, and I’m excited as hell, but I’m getting kind of sick of the word “prospect”… bring ’em on!!!) had a 4 hit, 3 RBI performance in his 2nd big league game. He should be staying, not going back to Iowa. I like Darwin, and I love his glove, but a .224 BA is not getting it done. He seems like a good clubhouse guy, and would be nice to keep on the team, but he needs to be on the bench. AA should be playing from this day forward. Let’s see what this kid has.
We also saw 3 Cubs pitching prospects back to back to back in this series; they didn’t look bad. This was Beeler’s 2nd game, and he wasn’t horrible. With a combined 3.27 ERA in his 2 starts, he pitched well enough to win, but lost both games. Welcome to the 2014 Cubs Dallas. Wada pitched 5 scoreless, but that wasn’t enough for the Cubs to win either. Hendricks had one bad inning on Thursday, as he gave up 4 runs through 6. Surprisingly, the Cubs were able to come back and win this game. This ended a six game losing streak since the trade. I’m finally going to shower… I guess the point being with these pitchers, and with the pitchers we had before them, is no matter how well they pitch, this team needs offensive help… bad. This is what is sitting in our farm system; offensive prospects galore. Patience is a virtue, but we need them Theo. I guess we’re not going to try to win this year either…
Let’s end this on a high note, and circle back to the 4 best players in town. It’s nice to have some guys that will be here for a while, or will they. I think Sale, Abreu, and Rizzo will be, but what about Starlin? If AA sticks at 2B, where are Baez and Russell going to play? OK, I said we’re ending this on a high note. Let’s keep Starlin, although I’m not sure that will be the 1st jersey I buy my son. I’m leaning Rizzo at this point… Let’s build around our all stars, and field some winning teams here in Chicago. With 2 chances to win something every year in baseball, we’re bound to hit eventually… right? Once in 97 years is not enough.
