July 10, 2017: Lots of Mulligans

We may need a mulligan for the Cubs first half, but on our annual golf trip, there are lots of mulligans required.  It all started back in 2000.

That was the first annual father son golf trip.  We started with a bang: a cross country trip to Myrtle Beach.  I believe we were gone for almost a week.  Since then, a total of 18 years, we’ve been on 15 golf trips; today marked the start of the 15th trip.

Things have changed since that first golf trip 18 years ago.  We’ve completed our foursome with the addition of our brother in law.  He’s really good by the way, and even with a stroke a hole except on par 3s, had no problem claiming this year’s title.  We no longer go for a week.  The last couple have been one nighters with 54 holes of golf.  We’d definitely like to squeeze another day in there, and spread out the golf a bit, but with our families, time and money are important, especially during the summer.  I’m just glad we continue to try do to it; I think we’ll able to bump it up one day.

Another thing that has changed is the amount of drinking that goes on.  These used to be total beerfests; now, not so much.  There are beers consumed, but we can actually clearly remember our trips now; although as time goes by, all those historic memories come back to us, and our rehashed on the current year trip.  There are some classics.

Personally, I teed off on the first hole for the first time in 2 years.  Last year was one of those years we didn’t make the trip; I never even made it out period.  With that being said, I actually shot pretty well.  98 isn’t a real good golf score, but with my 14 stroke handicap, I was tied for the lead after 18.  It was all downhill after that.  The golfing was especially bad on the next day’s round.

But the times were good.  The food was really good too.  We were in the middle of nowhere, but that buffalo chicken sandwich was tremendous, as was the biscuits and gravy on the breakfast buffet line.  I surely ate my fill in these two days.  We had a half marathon poker session as well.  Not a lot of money being tossed around, but plenty of cards were played.  There’s another thing that I don’t do nearly as much as I used to.  I love playing cards.

But above all, and if you’ve ever read this blog before, you know it’s the family time that is most important.  Whether I’m talking about my wife and son, or in this case, “the guys”, that time spent together is what it’s all about.  All the memories already recorded…all the ones still left to make.  The quantity of time may not be the same, but the quality is always top notch.

It was nice this year to have something to watch during our Monday night dinner.  The home run derby was being shown on all the TVs.  It did not disappoint either.  Let’s talk some MLB all star stuff next.

Mulligans and memories, both have always been big parts of our golf trips. We are by no means pros. We try to keep it respectable, but after a while, we just want to hit a halfway decent golf shot. It doesnt help that we dont play but once or twice a year. At the end of the day, it doesnt really matter who wins. Try to keep it close but enjoy the times instead. Out playing golf, warm weather, drinks, cards, food, pool, and hanging out make these trips special every time we go. Pretty cool that we keep going, even as things have changed over the years. The golf trip memories will never be forgotten! FORE!!!
