July 1, 2019: Welcome Back

One of those guys you love to hate if he’s not on your team, and one of those guys who you love when he is, the Blackhawks will rekindle an old flame as they bring back #65 Andrew Shaw. Welcome Back Shawzy!

First thing I remember is the 2013 Stanley Cup run. I think it was Game 1 against Boston that was the most memorable… if my memory serves me correct. No, I’m not going to look it up. I think it was in 3OT where Shaw got the deflection for the big win. Then I think it was the clincher where he took a puck in the face… maybe it was Game 5? Anyways, scrappy dude with some skill; yeah, he hasn’t always done the smartest things. Some comments of his got blown up leading to an apology. He did commit some dumb penalties on the ice too if my memory serves me correct. But, he was tough, and always played hard, getting pissed when we were losing, and willing to do something about it, even if it was stupid. Can’t totally hate that. We need guys with that fire; hopefully after his short time away, he still brings the flame when he steps back on the ice at the UC next year.

Hawks made another move signing a “backup” goaltender Robin Lehner. Wow. I didn’t see that one coming. Thinking we were fine with Crow and Delia going into next year, I certainly did not think we were going to add another goaltender. Yet, now that we have, and it’s a guy of high quality, I love it. First thing’s first is, Crow’s health. As we’ve seen over the last couple years, that’s no guarantee… and we’ve gotten absolutely burned from it. Sure, Delia is nice, but is he a number one? Lehner is a #1. Whether or not he needs to fill that role with the Blackhawks, will depend on Crow’s health. Yet, to have a 1A and 1B option when both guys are healthy, certainly isn’t a bad place to be. At the very least, give Crow plenty of time off, and not lose much in the crease. I’m all for it.

Have the Blackhawks done enough this offseason for you? I’ve seen some pissed with the draft, and others pissed with the fact that they haven’t made a BIG splash. Like the Bulls offseason thus far, I’m not mad at it. Sure, would I have loved to see the top guys playing in the UC next year? Of course. Yet, if you asked me are the Hawks a better team on paper now than they were last year, I would have to say yes. Again, just the fact that we’ll have an entire offseason with our new coach at the helm should help. It should help us see more of the Hawks that were killing it for a while last year, in between the horrible start and bad ending. Can they make one more run?

Also heard rumblings about Bowman getting an extension? I wouldn’t say the offseason has been that good, plus, let’s give it some time before we make any decision. Coach Q had to take the fall; Bowman should be next if the Hawks aren’t back in the playoffs next year. No need to do anything yet in my opinion. Hopefully, we will extend him… after the Hawks are raising another Cup next year; no problem with that in that particular scenario. Go Hawks!
