I’ve never seen a doubleheader in person. I guess I should add that to my bucket list. Imagine a day full of baseball. Everybody wants to rush the game. It’s too slow. It’s takes too long. It’s boring. Well, I’m sorry, but I just don’t agree.
I do agree that it is hard to carve out 3 hours in any day to do something. But, if I had to choose something, being at a baseball game would be towards the top. Are there some games that last too long? Well, there are always those marathon extra inning games every year, but just like a doubleheader, it’s pretty rare and it’s something I’d like to be in attendance for one time in my life.
My son had the closest thing he’s had to a doubleheader this weekend. A game on Friday at 6pm and a game on Saturday at 930am. Being a holiday weekend, the guy from the park asked me if I was going to have enough players. I said yeah, we should. Well, I guess we did.
6 kids on Friday and 5 on Saturday. I knew of a couple that would be missing, but we have like 13 kids on the roster. And of course, nobody lets me know if they’re not going to make it. We made due. It was a quicker game since there were less kids to bat every inning from our side, and it was a good chance to practice our defense with hardly enough kids to cover the field. I want to say we tied both games.

I have a couple kids, including my own, who always want to crowd around the pitcher’s mound; they want the ball. They argue about who stands where and sometimes engage in a pre-pitch shoving match to get in position. I don’t want to teach the aggressiveness out of them, but I do need to keep order. Anyways, one of the main things I worry about is one of them getting smacked with the ball. I tell them “backup”! I draw a line with my foot and tell them stand behind it. It’s a softer league ball, but I’m sure it would hurt if it was lined off your face. Well, that happened.
My son tried to get his glove up, but it ricocheted off his cheek. He started crying. I immediately rushed over there. That’s one of the things I remember about my dad when he was coaching. If any kid ever got hit with the ball, or was apparently hurt, he would run over there in like a second. I’m sure he did the same for me when I got hit in the face in my first game; I don’t remember because I was knocked out cold. Yeah, it wasn’t a softer league ball back then. But my dad was always right there when something like that happened; that was pretty cool.
So I pressed my son against my chest, as he cried for a few seconds. It was the last batter, so we slowly made our way to the dugout about a minute later. He usually doesn’t cry long. I either try to make him laugh or he wants to get back to what he’s doing; we were batting next…he didn’t want to miss that.
Just a red cheek, not the baseball’s seam marks, was his prize during the first game of our double dip. I guess that means I should double up on the blogs this week on my son’s Cubs team; it’s better than talking about the real ones in Cincy. In either case, go Cubs!

They only thing better than playing baseball is watching your kid play it. Getting hit with the ball is part of the game and once a kid makes it to pee-wee, it gets worst; and they play with an official league ball! Most of the kids pitching throw hard, but have no control over the pitch. You may have one or two that can throw with control, but they are few and far between. My kid has been hit almost everywhere on the body and face. Suck it up and get back in the batters box. We have some kids that back away during each pitch b/c of this, you need to work with them to overcome their fear. Personally, I have seen my kid develop into a top of the lineup, slap hitter who has very good speed. Some kids hit for power, some need work, the most important part is they have fun and learn about teamwork and good sportsmanship.
For the parents out there, let them have fun and remember its just baseball and don’t push, yell or scream at them…its only a game!
Go Cubs and GO baseball!

Double headers, what a way to spend the day. I would love to watch a Cubs double header one day. I used to play in double headers back in high school…good times! Now that the kids are playing, it would be pretty sweet to watch games all day, especially when they win.
Tough shot for Leo but it may be a good thing in the long run. Now he knows what it feels like to be hit by the ball so the fear factor may be gone once facing live pitching or having to get in front of hard grounders. The pain is short lived and the game continues. Not much beats a day at the ballpark or field or whatever you can play baseball on. GO CUBS GO!!!
