January 8, 2015: Sub Zero

posted in: Blackhawks, Bulls | 1

How you enjoying this weather we’re having?  It’s been plenty cold out the last couple days, but we should be prepared for that.  We’ve gotten lucky the past 6 weeks.  We’ve been lucky to have 2 top contending teams in basketball and hockey this year.  That’s the reason we can accept these past couple games.  The last 2 nights, the UC has been as cold as the other side of the pillow; no, not that type of cool, it’s been downright sub zero.

In attendance last night at the Bulls game, it was a no show from the start.  We could have predicted that.  Anyone who watched that Rockets game had to know a let down was coming.  I knew they would start off slow, I just thought they’d make a run at some point.  Thankfully, we were having enough fun off the court to distract us from this stinker.

The night before vs the Avalanche, the Hawks started slow also.  They’ve been starting slow lately, yet just as I predicted the Bulls would do, they’ve been able to come back and get the 2 points in most of these games.  Not so much on Tuesday night.  While getting my son ready for bed, he’s yelling to me that the Blackhawks scored… then about 30 seconds later, he’s saying they scored again.  I knew that couldn’t have been, but it was.  It wasn’t the Blackhawks though, but the Avalanche who scored 2 quick goals that ended up being the only tallies of the game.  Hawks shutout at home?  That’s got to be a rarity.

The Bulls have been red hot.  I believe it was 13 out of 15.  Just like the Brooklyn bomb the other night, the Jazz could thank their lucky stars.  I feel this Bulls team is to the point where most games they will lose from here on out, they will beat themselves.  Shooting 33% and scoring 77 points will not get the job done many nights in the NBA.  Similar to the other night, everyone seemed off, except maybe Taj.  It’s just one of those games you’ll see in an 82 game slate.  It’s nothing to worry about.

The same can be said for the Hawks.  I read bylines about the Winter Classic… Hawks shocked…  Hawks lose big one.  Get over it.  It was one game, and let’s not even go into the bogus penalty that was called on Toews in that one.  The Hawks are bound to have some off nights too.  The Winnipeg game, the Winter Classic, and Tuesday night against the Avalanche, all added up to 0 points for the Hawks.  You know besides those 3 games, there was only 1 other game that they’ve failed to earn one point in since November 23.  Really?

Looking at the Bulls most recent losses, besides the 2 recent bad losses, the only other losses they’ve had since the circus trip, have been to the #1 team in each conference, Atlanta and Golden State, and an OT loss to Dallas.  Really?

I’m chalking these up.  I’m not going to over analyze, and look at Rose’s shooting woes, or Crawford’s 1st period struggles.  I’m not going to complain about these teams playing down to their level of competition.  Right now, we should have NO complaints with these guys.  Right now, we should still be enjoying that ride.

Lastly before I end it, I wanted to mention Stuart Scott.  Here’s a guy who was one of my favorites on ESPN growing up.  I don’t even watch ESPN that much any more, partly because there are no more guys like Stuart Scott.  Rich Eisen has moved onto NFL Network, which I’ll watch.  Dan Patrick has his own show, which I’ll tune into here and there.  Even Harold Reynolds from Baseball Tonight has moved on to MLB Network, which I’ll watch religiously during the baseball season.  Stuart was a one of a kind.  Unfortunately, he didn’t move onto another network.  Unfortunately, I can’t tune in and listen to him any longer.  He really seemed to love Michael Jordan, which was great; it made sense, he was also a Tarheel.  I loved watching him do the Bulls highlights during that 2nd championship run.  Those were my favorite memories of him.   I never knew until he died where he was originally from.  It shouldn’t surprise me.  Another legend from the Windy City; RIP Stuart Scott… I enjoyed the ride.  Boo Yah!

Long seasons for the Hawks and Bulls…nothing to worry about. Neither team will be going undefeated the rest of the way, so losses are going to happen. Just as long as the wins keep piling on top of these rare nights off. GO HAWKS!!! GO BULLS!!!
