January 7, 2022: Bad Get Worse

I was all excited to watch the Blackhawks on Thursday night. They had to beat the pathetic Coyotes, right? Surely the losing streak would be over, no? No. The Hawks came out of the gate slow, dug themselves a hole, and couldn’t come all the way back to win; sound familiar? That sounds like the story of the 2021-2022 Hawks season.

You can’t come out flat, not if you’re a middling at best team like the Blackhawks. You have to bring your A game every period, shift to shift; the Hawks came out and let the last place Coyotes take control of the game. That’s completely unacceptable. Are we going to blame the coach again? Maybe the GM that is no longer around to admire the talent he has assembled on the ice? When will the players be held accountable? Well, I think it’s safe to say the joy ride under King is now officially over.

Yes, the Hawks played better as the first period continued, before tying it in the 2nd period, before trailing by a goal heading into intermission. The Blackhawks would be able to keep the switch on and overcome these guys, right? Well, the first goal of the third period, which Fleury didn’t see because of all the bodies in front of him, including Andrew Laad (remember him?), was scored by Arizona. Fleury claimed goalie interference, but after seeing the replay, it was pretty clear that was a long shot. Yet, the Blackhawks decided to challenge anyways. OK, I guess. You don’t want to go down by 2 goals in the 3rd period. Worst case, we lose our timeout… no biggie. We lost the challenge, as anybody with 2 eyes could have predicted, but instead of losing a timeout, I guess in the NHL the team that loses the challenge goes on penalty kill; what? How did I not know this? Now, knowing this, the challenge was an absolutely horrible move. I know you don’t want to go down 2 goals, but… maybe if it was close… It was a long shot at best; it was a dumb risk. The Coyotes promptly scored on the power play, and now, a 2 goal deficit became a 3 goal deficit. That would be important.

After this series of events, the Hawks were flying with their hair on fire… the way they should have been playing the whole game. If they were, they would have won. Two goals later, the Hawks trailed by one as the third period wound down; there goes that lost challenge consequence. The Hawks couldn’t get the game tying goal; the Coyotes added an empty netter. Game, set, match. The Hawks have lost 6 straight games.

Where do we go from here? It will not get easier than this game, and we couldn’t break our losing streak? Sure, the bad start to the season looms large, but maybe this team wasn’t that good after all. The coaching change mojo lasted a little while, but now that’s gone. Now what? Well, on this evening in Arizona, the bad got worse. Only one way to go from here… right?
