It was another tough matchup vs the Celtics on Saturday night at the UC. This young team plays up to the challenge, or maybe the Bulls play down to the challenge, but either way, it’s made for some good basketball.
By good basketball, I don’t mean turnover free. Good Lord there was some sloppy basketball out there. By good basketball, I mean close, down to the wire games. Boston had us again, but we battled back, and won a game we should have won all along.
No Jimmy Buckets (bereavement), or Mike Dunleavy (ankle) in this one. Who stepped up? Pau fricking Gasol. The guy played like a beast in this one. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again, I didn’t think Gasol had this in him. From watching him play with the Lakers, he looked weak. Maybe it’s because he was with the Lakers that I got this impression of him, but he never seemed like a truly physical force. Well, he is now. He did whatever he pleased tonight against this smaller Boston lineup. In fact, I say he could have did more. He did seem to settle on some outside shots in this one, like dare I say, Boozer. Blasphemy I say, blasphemy.
More impressive than his offense, has been his play on the defensive side of the ball. This guy blocks everything in sight. He’s huge, and has a crazy wingspan. You add a little desire to that, a little motivation, and you got a shot blocking machine. Stat of the night for me was when Stacey said in 4 years Boozer had 92 blocks… this year so far, Gasol has 72, and I think he got a couple more after that was mentioned. Gasol, like the Bulls tonight, did what he should have, and that was dominate. When was the last time we had a dominating big man?

I’m screaming at the TV asking somebody to cover this guy. He kills us… always has. His numbers vs us have to be better than vs any other team. Guess he likes playing against his home town team, in front of his family and friends. He lit us up in the 3rd quarter, and personally had the Celtics winning the game. Thankfully, he cooled, with a little help from a nice shot block by Taj in OT.
This Celtic team has some good young pieces… maybe too many. I’m not so sure their coach Stevens knows how to fit them all together yet. I like a couple of the pieces they got in the Rondo trade with Wright and Crowder. Doesn’t seem like they’re in the rotation yet. Brandon Bass is a pretty decent player that barely saw the court today. Olynyk looked lost out there… I’m about 2 seconds from cutting him from my fantasy team. In the East, any team could make the playoffs in the bottom half. If this team could get some consistency, they could do it. I don’t see why not. That would make someone I know across the country very happy.
You know someone else who looks lost out there… Derrick Rose. I felt myself being very impatient with him tonight. He’s been shooting horrible, makes careless turnovers, has been getting lit up on defense, and just seems lackadaisical at times. But… he’s been on the court consistently, which is a very good thing, especially since he’s still trying to find that all star status again. There have been moments, especially late in the game, where you see the signs again, and that’s probably the best sign. To have 2 options along with Jimmy G at the end of the game is a nice luxury to have. By the way, that was an awesome play drew up by Thibs at the end of regulation in this one.. if only Brooks makes that shot.
So it took OT, but it was worth the wait. Now just 1.5 games behind the new leaders of the East, the Atlanta Hawks. Is that a misprint? Nope, the Atlanta Hawks are leading the conference. That just can’t last can it? The Bulls will prepare for another tough matchup vs the Western Conference at the UC on Monday night, and that’s the Houston Rockets. Meanwhile, they keep looking strong, winning close games, poised to grab the top of the East… and not look back.
