January 31, 2015: The Sky is Falling

posted in: Bulls | 0

The Bulls lose another game. How could this be?  What’s wrong with the Bulls?  Let’s fire Thibs.  Let’s blow it up and start over.  I’m sick of it!  Do we think the Bulls are going to win every single game?

Currently, the Bulls sit at 30-19 in 4th place in the East. If they play 11 games over the rest of the way out, and finish with 52 wins, that means they will lose 30 games this year.  30 games!  That’s disastrous!  The sky is falling!  We suck!  Well, not exactly…

A 52-30 record in the NBA eastern conference is not too bad; it hasn’t been over the last 14 years. In fact in every year since 2001, that record would have got you the 3rd or 4th seed every year, even 2nd in 2006… 1st in 2001 & 2002!  So 30 losses gets you that?  How can we live with ourselves?

I do get it. It’s all about the precedent that the Bulls have set in the regular season under Thibs. They’ve finished with the #1 seed twice. They outworked every team for 82 games. They almost always beat the teams they were supposed to beat.  The bar has been set high. Yet, people would still complain because Thibs would run his guys too hard in the regular season to achieve these goals, yet fall short when it counts…  Of course, there was the little problem of missing your best player too…

It’s all about the expectations too. I’ve billed this team as championship contenders, and after their winning streak and big victories, there are many others who feel the same. So now greatness is expected, and every time they lose it’s an issue… Relax people!

I’m not one of those people, but if I was, I’d be happy right now. Thibs is spreading the minutes around more than ever… Limiting minutes as well. But we start losing some games… letting that regular season title slip away, and we want to flip out?

Let’s not forget, this is a “new” team. Derrick hasn’t played in forever. He’s the first “new” piece. Gasol is in his first year. Mirotic, Brooks, Moore, McDermott when he comes back. OK, but we still have a lot of the core, right?  Well, yes, but they’re “new” too!  Jimmy buckets was a role player the past few years.  Now, he’s an all-star; big difference. Joakim is coming off knee surgery; he hasn’t been the same player yet, although he’s been looking a lot more like himself.  So really the only same players we got in the rotation are Dunleavy, Hinrich, and Taj. Dunleavy has been out. Kirk has been looking his age. Taj has been banged up.  How many games has THIS Bulls team played together???

It takes time is what I’m saying.  The Bulls are a lock to make the playoffs right?  Yeah, but what about those home losses?  I’ll agree there. That’s one place where we should be taking care of business… And we haven’t been.  This is more concerning than anything, although I’m not quite freaking out.

Yes, the bar is high. Yes, expectations are big. Yes, this was supposed to be the Bulls year…it still can be!  Where was all the talk and celebration after the Bulls win over the NBAs best on the road?  Just like anything else, losses are talked about way more than wins.  Negatives focused on way more than positives.

I’m here to refocus everyone. There are a lot of positives here. This Bulls team will be in the playoffs, playing meaningful games this spring. They have just a good a chance as anybody else to make the finals, ok?  Just don’t stroke out before then over some of these losses.  You too need to save yourself for when it counts. We need you. The Bulls will need everybody at their best. Only 33 more games until the playoffs….
