There are tough losses, and then there are TOUGH losses. Saturday night’s Bulls game was the latter. This game was all but in the W column before the Blazers, really Lillard, snatched it. It was a stunner.
It was a hard fought battle; it really was a great game to watch. The Blazers pulled out to a pretty big lead early in the 2nd half, but the Bulls battled back. Lauri had himself a game, as did the other two members of the current Bulls “big 3”; Zach and Coby also played well. One of the problems the Bulls have had is closing out games; I really thought they did well in this one. Every offensive possession down the stretch showed the improved ball movement from our boys. Great passing, moving, creating easy opportunities to score, working hard to get there… trip after trip down the floor, the Bulls were really grinding out there. Then of course you had Zach putting up a reckless three pointer… that pissed me off. After all the work on each possession, really zoning in on what needed to be done, then you have Zach chucking up a brick early in the shot clock. Sure enough though, the next chance Zach got, he absolutely drained a long three pointer… much more in the rhythm of the offense. I think that’s key. If it’s a good shot, in rhythm, wide open, take it. No more “hero ball” should be required, although if needed, we know Zach can take us there. It wasn’t needed on this night… on the Bulls side.
On the Blazers side though, they got a guy. Damian Lillard… damn. The Bulls held a 3 point lead late. The Blazers fouled; Coby made both free throws. By the way, the Bulls were perfect from the free throw line in this one; I love to see that. For teams learning how to win, learning how to close games out, not living with those upper tier teams, it’s just another component that helps make this happen. Lillard comes down, bam, hits a trey. Bulls inbound the ball to Zach… he gets fouled, I mean, the refs call jump ball. I don’t get it… clear foul to me, but… I guess lesson learned is to call a timeout if you have one, and the Bulls had one. Second lesson is to win that damn jump ball… there was a scramble, time was ticking down, Lillard picked it up, took a dribble, and fired a three pointer with Lauri’s hand right in front of him; bam… game over. It was really a stunner… my wife, son, and I just sat there looking at the TV… wow.

Sure, there are lessons to learn here as we continue to get better at winning these types of games, but Lillard single handedly pulled this game out of the loss column for the Blazers. It sucked to lose, but it was impressive to see that type of performance at the end of the game by that guy. What would it take to get him on the Bulls?
Anyways… shake off this hard day’s night…with 2 against the Knicks, then 2 against the Magic this upcoming week, the Bulls should be shooting to get no less than 3 wins. Pissed off? Take it out on these teams this week. Go Bulls!
