Who else likes to watch old games?
Typically I don’t have much time to do this, but this Thursday night, presented an opportunity. After watching the end of The Revenant, and flipping through the channels with nothing else to watch, I jumped on YouTube. What to watch, what to watch… I’ve been giving history lessons on YouTube to my son, watching old Bears, Bulls, Blackhawks, and Cubs stuff. We rotate; he picks something, then I pick something. Lately, I’ve been watching some old wrestling stuff with him, like Macho Man, British Bulldogs, and Andre the Giant classics. There is a never ending list of things I want to watch with him, but tonight, it’s about what can I watch. What can I watch that my son wouldn’t? OK… not that… Chicago sports related. OK, we’re going back to 1985; which Bears game to pick? We went with the Week 6 match up in San Francisco against the Niners… yes, the whole game.
Obviously the Bears were 5-0 at the time; the Niners were 3-2. Last time these 2 teams met, the Niners ended our season in the 1984 NFL Championship game; they would win the Super Bowl. This meeting would be a little bit different. Bears drove right down the field and scored. McMahon was looking to be at his peak performance. He hit backup tight end Tim Wrightman down the middle for a big play; he dropped a beautiful pass to Gault that setup the TD. He even scrambled for a nice pickup. People forget how good the Bears offense was this year. Then of course there was #34 in the backfield. There was nothing he couldn’t do. He caught a nice pass out of the backfield, he delivered a nice block which allowed the completion to Gault, then he followed a pulling Bortz for the short rushing TD. 7-0 just like that.

Even the first career start of some rookie WR named Rice wouldn’t help them. After a punt and a Bears field goal, two straight fumbles caused and recovered by the D. I know one was Wilber poking it out and Danimal recovering; can’t remember the other one… maybe I already started fading. I did wake up for Payton’s 2nd TD of the day, a nice run to the left pylon. Then I fell deeper asleep… when I woke up, the Bears Cowboys game from that year was on, and the Bears were trotting into the locker room up 24-0. I turned off the TV.
I can watch this stuff all day. I actually have the DVD set of every game that season; I already went through those once. Easier to watch on YouTube though… Another funny thing I noticed during this game was the Fridge on Special Teams; he was running down the field on kick coverage! Love it. I did miss his first carry of the year, a special payback to the Niners for using McIntyre against us the year before; I remember that fondly.
OK, I think it’s time to talk about the other game the Niners will be playing in… the Super Bowl this upcoming Sunday. Let’s get into it.
