January 29, 2017: Hawk Stars

Did you watch any of the NHL all star weekend festivities?  I actually did.

I did not see any of the NHL100 festivities, but saw the results.  There were plenty of Hawk Stars on there.  Max Bentley and Glenn Hall, guys that I do not know about, were named earlier this month.  Hull, Mikita, Esposito, and Savard, all four of the Blackhawks ambassadors, were rightfully on the team.  You probably could have argued for Pierre Pilote too?  The 9 Blackhawks that did make it on the list were completed by 3 of the 5 active players on this list.  Toews, Kane, and Keith were all named.  No arguments here.  They joined Crosby and Ovechkin as the 5 active players in this special group.

I tuned in on Saturday afternoon and evening for some of the pre-game festivities.  They have all kinds of competitions.  I saw the Pronger hit on Bieber against the boards in the celebrity game; that was funny.  Then there was the skills competition; I think that’s what they called it.  Where Keith had to score on a one time blast with a few other guys, Toews had to saucer pass the puck into 5 very small nets, PK Subban had to skate around some cones as fast as he could, before Kane finished it off with some stickhandling beauty.  I believe that group won that competition, or at least beat the team they were facing in the first round.  Can’t remember why I didn’t watch the end of that..

Other contests featured the fastest skater and the hardest shot.  Then it was shootout time.  Like both the MLB and NBA, I like to watch the stuff other than the game.  I actually do try to watch the MLB all star game; don’t watch the NBA or NFL ones.  I did catch a bit of the games on Sunday too.

I liked the format.  It ends up being 3 mini 3 on 3 games.  With the winners of the first 2 games playing each other in the final contest.  The Blackhawks team lost in the first round, with Crow getting torched; that’s why Darling is starting now… OK, that was a low blow.  Crow deserved to be there, and I’m not putting any stock in his ASG performance.  Toews scored a goal, although he doesn’t deserve to be there either, right?  Well, that’s what he said… but the way he’s been playing lately, he looks to be back…

Saw another weekend story about Tortella not being able to coach the All Star team because of his son’s sick dog.  His son is away in the military, and the dog is not doing well, so he missed this weekend to be with the dog.  I have no problem with that.  Gretzky took over the coaching responsibilities.  I was thinking about Wayne… and how he was traded from Edmonton to LA around the peak of his career… one of the best NHL careers ever, if not THE best.  That’s insane.  I need to read some more about that.  That would be an interesting read, like why did they move him?  what that did for the US, LA, and the west coast in regards to hockey interest?  Trying to think of another sport where the best athlete was traded at the top of his game.  Although maybe if I read more into it, the Great One may have been on the down turn?  Or maybe that’s what the Oilers thought.  Put that on my list of things to look into… a long list… that I’ll get to one day.

For the meantime, it’s Chicago sports every day.  Hey, even the Bulls pulled out a victory on Sunday night.  Shall we talk about that next?  Or maybe it’s time for my Super Bowl pick?  Or what about the NFL Pro Bowl, or better yet, the Bears draft?  Can’t forget about Sox Fest… yeah I can.  But baseball is starting soon, and there’ll be one team defending their championship for the first time in a while.  Next up is…

Didnt see any of the nhl skill competitions or 3on3 games. I did see the Bhawks get introduced and booed in la…go figure with those queen fans. Hopefully, the Bhawks rested up and recharged to get ready for the 2nd half. Time to finish strong, get home ice, and make some noise in the playoffs. Cup #4 on the horizon? Still too early to say, but it is definitely a possibility.
