Once the games concluded on Championship Sunday, the Super Bowl was set. The Kansas City Chiefs will play against the San Francisco 49ers. Who you got?
Before we get into that, let’s talk about how they got here. The Chiefs are on a roll. They beat a Dolphins team in KC in the elements that couldn’t beat a good team all year. They went on the road in Buffalo and beat the Bills, again, and their injury depleted defense. On Sunday, the Ravens decided for some reason to NOT run the ball against them, as the Chiefs went on to advance to another Super Bowl. Sounds like the Chiefs had a pretty easy road. However, let’s give the Chiefs their flowers. They’ve played well. All of the above may be true, but at the end of the day, the Chiefs won the games, and it wasn’t just Mahomes and Kelce. The Chiefs defense has been phenomenal. They went on the road and beat the #2 and #1 seeded teams in the AFC. Tip of the hat to Andy Reid and his club. Although I don’t know anybody outside of Kansas City that wants to see them in another Super Bowl, they do deserve to be there.
What the hell happened to the Ravens? Seriously, how could you NOT run the ball that game? You barely tried. The game plan for that game was questionable at best. They seemed to put it all on Lamar, and… he didn’t come through. The 3 turnovers decided the game. The Lamar fumble, the Zay fumble, and the pick Lamar through into triple coverage. After the Chiefs jumped on the Ravens, the D settled down, but the offense needs to score more than 7 points… It was a complete bust of a game. Lamar still hasn’t won a big game; I should have known better. Although, the game plan… very curious. Bye Ravens.
In the 2nd game of the day, the Niners bounced the Lions from the playoffs. 24-7 at the half… I couldn’t believe it. The Lions jumped all over the Niners; I wish I would have played the Niners back in-game, but I didn’t have the opportunity until the value was all but gone. San Fran turned this game around in a heartbeat in the 3rd quarter. I was glad that the Lions punched it in at the end there, to cover like champs, but.. why call the timeout before that play? Holding on to that 3rd timeout was critical. Once you called it, you needed the onside kick, which nobody ever gets. Not very smart IMO, kind of like last week when the Bucs refused to use their last timeout against the Lions. Just have to ask yourself about some of this stuff… things that make you go hmmmm…
All the going for it on 4th down… but that was the Lions all year, right? Still, it certainly would have been nice to have an extra 3 points… tie game. There needs to be balance. You need to stick to who you are, no doubt, but in some situations, you need to kick the FG. Don’t trust your kicker? Then why is he on the roster? I don’t know… Some of these coaches can’t handle the big game. Experience does matter.
This brings us to a Super Bowl rematch. Last time these two teams met, few years back, it was the Chiefs beating the Niners. When it comes to an ultimate revenge angle, as long as the main parties are the same (Reid, Shanahan, Mahomes, yes; Purdy no), it’s tough to overlook. It’s one of my favorite angles to play, along with going against the public, especially in the biggest fixed game of the year. I know the Chiefs, and everything that comes with them, are the NFL darlings, but man… the Niners get another chance at them. OK, let me wait to dive in further, but I definitely do have an early play on this game. Can’t wait.
