January 28, 2020: Nick Goes

As the sports world mourns, the Reds swooped in and signed Nicholas Castellanos; what a total lack of respect. Although he was only a Cub for a short time, I really liked him. Seeing the Reds sign yet another player, makes me worried about them this year… OK maybe not that.

Nick goes to Cincinnati eh? Well, good luck buddy. I’m sure you’re going to enjoy playing in front of a half full stadium. OK, maybe an 80% full stadium when the Cubs come to visit. Yeah, it’s going to be a bit different than playing in front of the faithful at Wrigley, but you already know this; heck, you were in Detroit for a while. It still sucks though. The energy this dude brought when he was here was huge; something that seemed to be missing. Yes, we have our energy guys, but this guy was like the cherry on top; his performance was nuts too. He thrived playing for the Cubs; guess I’m hoping he tails off a bit as he heads to a division rival.

It especially sucks when you have to play this guy multiple times per year. It’s a lot easier to swallow when somebody ends up in the American League, like Joe Maddon. I wouldn’t want to see him across the field from us many times, but it’s not like he can get a game winning hit. Yeah, although maybe Nick’s overall play will tail off, something tells me he is going to torment us. I can see it now… Nick, coming back to Wrigley, wearing those ugly Reds uniforms, hitting bombs, hurtful, timely hits. I’m sure he’ll get a nice hand when he first returns; I’m sure we’ll all be sick of him once he gets a few big knocks against us.

But it’s our fault… maybe. It’s our fault for not having the cash to sign him, but that’s even if the Cubs wanted to sign him. I wonder. I know how the majority of the fan base felt. We all wanted to see Nick in right field at Wrigley for a long time, yet, we’ll have to settle for Steven Souza Jr; hey, maybe he will contribute this year. But he’s not Nick… I wish I could wish him good luck, but unfortunately, since his play will directly impact his team’s performance, and that team resides in the same division as us, I hope he sucks. It is what it is.

Yes, the Cubs continue to make small moves, standing pat on any big free agent signings. Again, we have some guys on our team we need to take care of; that appears to be the priority, and I’m OK with that. If you think since the Cubs did nothing this offseason, that the results will be the same or worse as last season, you wouldn’t be alone… but I’m not counting myself in that group. I believe the Cubs DO have enough to get it done; I believed it last year, and since it really hasn’t changed, I believe it this year. There’s more than enough talent on this roster to get the job done. Plus, if things are looking up, don’t for a second think Theo will not try to add to the roster mid-season and/or at the trade deadline. By that time, things will be cleared up, both with individual players, their future with the Cubs, the team’s performance… Now if the Cubs start off slow, and continue down that path, we will be having a totally different conversation. Until then, I’m excited for Cubs season to start; I’m curious how Ross will do in his first managerial job. Let’s get this season started. Go Cubs!
