January 28, 2019: The Other Baseball Team

posted in: White Sox | 3

OK, so I don’t talk much about the White Sox.  To be fair, since I started this in 2014, not much to talk about there… But OK.  They are a Chicago team in one of the 4 major sports.  And yes Bullwinkle, maybe I should show them some love, so here we go; now you can’t say I never talk about them.

The Chicago White Sox truly are the other baseball team here in Chicago; that’s why most of the fans act the way they do.  It wasn’t all the Sox fault though… similar to the Blackhawks, the White Sox put many of their games on SportsVision back in the day; not a smart move.  So while many of us IN OUR OWN CITY, couldn’t watch the White Sox on TV, we were there like clockwork in front of the TV for the 1pm lead off man.  So yeah, big reason I’m a bigger Cubs fan than White Sox fan.  Of course I will say White Sox fans are more of a die hard group in general than the Cubs, by percentage I mean; that’s not the Cubs fault though.  There may be 10 million Cubs “fans”; maybe only 2 million or 20% are die hard.  There may be 1 million Sox “fans”; maybe half of them are die hard, or 50%.  I’m just making these numbers up of course, but you get the drift.  One of the pre-requisites to being a die hard Sox fan is to hate the Cubs, of course.  I heard you have to proclaim your hate for the Cubs if you want to work for the Sox… haha.  Big difference between Cubs and Sox fans; most Cubs fans don’t pay much attention to the Sox… another thing that pisses them off.  Anyways, I didn’t want to talk trash about the Sox; I’m supposed to be showing them some love.

The Sox clinching the pennant in 1983 was one of my first sports memories.  Yes, I rooted for the Sox back in the day, just like the Cubs.  I went to many more Sox games than Cubs game; lived closer to Comiskey.  I just watched a lot more Cubs games, and grew closer to them over time.  Unfortunately or not, for me, it comes down to choosing one or the other; that is an easy choice.  But, I shouldn’t completely shut out the Sox should I?

As far as the happiness provided to me by the Sox, it’s minimal.  In my youth, it was more; now, if the Sox win or lose, it really doesn’t matter to me.  In 2005, I didn’t get any personal joy.  But, it’s bigger than me.  It’s about my city, right?  So I was happy for Chicago.  It’s about my family and friends, right?  So I was happy for my dad and for my buddies that were Sox fans.  It was just hard to express that with the Cubs not having one won yet… being only 2 years after the Cubs ripped my heart out.  I didn’t watch the World Series that year because I didn’t want to root against them.  So there’s that… you’re welcome.

OK, getting kind of long winded here.  I think what I’m trying to say is:  I don’t hate the Sox… I just don’t like them any more… it’s been a while.  When it comes to baseball in Chicago, there is only 1 team.  But… like I said, I will try to be supportive for my city, for my family.  I’ll try OK?  Go S…. nah, can’t say it.  Go Chicago!

No hate for the white sox, only when they send it the Cubs way. Growing up, we always went to more sox games. I loved the fireworks for home runs and the firework nights after games even more. The walk through the tunnel on 35th Street was always cool, too…singing “nah, nah, nah, nah…nah, nah, nah, nah…hey, hey, hey, goodbye!” I agree that a big reason we became Cubs fans was because they were always on wgn, channel 9. We did not have cable so we could not watch the sox games. I was only 4 for the 83 season, but I remember julio cruz, rudy law, kittle, baines, luzinski…I even think I was at a sox playoff game vs the mariners, not sure what year. At some point, it became only about the Cubs. I was definitely happy for family and friends when the sox won in 2005. I was not hating. It just seems that the sox hate for the Cubs shines through no matter what, and that is what makes me return the favor. It is hard having 2 baseball teams in the same city. The Cubs are my team. The sox are the other team. No ill will wished their way as long as it isn’t wished my way. It would be super cool to have both teams play good baseball and in the playoffs. Cannot imagine a World Series between the two…wow! Good luck to the sox this season…maybe another year or two away from competing? We shall see.
