January 26, 2017: Another Collapse

posted in: Blackhawks, Bulls | 1

What’s up with collapses recently at the UC?  First, the lowly Lightning strike (sorry) three times in the third to beat the Hawks. Then, the Bulls soap opera kicked into sweeps mode after blowing the game to the Hawks. Finally, the Blackhawks give up another three third period goals as the Jets defeat them for the fourth time this year.  I’m afraid to watch Friday night.

Did you see all the post game drama after the Blackhawks loss Thursday night?  Kane calling out his teammates for lack of effort.  Toews ripping into Darling in goal. Next will be Hartman with an instagram post ripping both of them, while the biggest problem is Bowman and Coach Q.  Whoa, I’m getting my UC teams mixed up.

Of course you didn’t see that, because it didn’t happen. It would never happen. Yeah, never say never, but although the Blackhawks play in the same building, they are nowhere close to the mess that the Bulls are.  No, the Blackhawks are like the Brady Bunch compared to the Bulls and the Restless. But the Brady Bunch did have problems too…

The goalie situation is a good one to be in, right?  I mean, to have two great goalies on the same team, the Hawks have a ‘problem’ most teams would love to have. But then there was the Darling start on Thursday night that Coach Q stressed was performance based.  Crow has definitely cooled in the crease after his MVP start and Darling has definitely been playing better, but… yeah, maybe Coach Q is just trying to light a fire under Crow’s ass.  Still, something to keep an eye on.

We won’t have to worry about that for much longer. With Darling a free agent, this may be the last time both these guys will be on the same team. You’d think we’d have to pick one, and with Crow under contract, it’s most likely Darling will go.  Unless…he outplays Crow down the stretch and into the postseason.  Then what?  If that postseason ends with a Cup, whoever is in goal should stay.  But that’s next year’s problem.

What about this year and why the heck can’t we beat the Jets?  0-4 this year against a potential playoff opponent is not good. Maybe the last time we’ll play them will be in February, and maybe we can get a win, but if we were to meet in the postseason… Then there’s the ex-Hawk factor again with Big Buff skating around out there…leading the league in minutes played per game. I miss him. Still, there have been other teams that ‘own’ us in the regular season, that we’ve smacked in the playoffs. That’s not totally out of the question here.

Not putting too much stock in the past 2 Hawks losses.  We’ve seen some more flashes from the young guys; like to see that.  Do we really need another scorer?  Although the goalies haven’t been great, the defense definitely hasn’t. Are we back in the market for another d-man?

Trust in Bowman. Yes, its night and day from the Bulls. That’s what 3 Cups buys you. In the Bulls case, that’s what 3 coaches buys you…or is it 4?  Need to see a win quickly. Hawks off until after the break, so it’s up to you Bulls.  Friday night at the UC…wonder how that team chemistry will play out on the court…I wouldn’t be surprised there’s more drama before tip off.  Stay tuned.

Bhawks finish the first half with a 2game losing streak, both times losing the games in the 3rd. Nothing to worry about. Kind of reminds me of the Cubs limping to the all-star break before starting the 2nd half hot…we know how they finished, too…World Champs! Hope the same happens for the Bhawks. Yes, they have some things to work on. Tighten up the D. Get Crow hot again. Like always, the power play is struggling…still a stumper considering the talent. This year, the penalty kill is not like it usually is. Time to get that right, too. So yes, some things for the Bhawks to work on, but nothing that I am worrying about now. Enjoy the all-star break, rest up, and stay away from the Bulls drama!
