Saturday was the first swim meet of the year for my son. It wasn’t the first swim meet of the year, or season I should say, but it’s the first one he’s been able to attend. With his grammar school basketball season going full blast, the priority has been on the hardwood. With the season over (almost), it’s time get to back in the pool. How’d it go?
My son has been swimming the whole time. There are 4 practices per week; he’s been attending about 50% this whole time, so he shouldn’t have been THAT rusty. Still, I was curious how he’d do in his first meet in a long time. This question was answered quickly in his first event, the 50M butterfly. I would say that’s his 2nd best stroke, next to breaststroke. I’m not sure why I get surprised by anything this kid does any more, but I was a little shocked. I knew he’d do well, but… to knock off 5 seconds from his time and to finish first in his heat, for his first swim meet since last season… well, yeah, not too shabby. It was a great start to the day; it was the first of four events for the aqua baby.
Swimming, basketball… basketball, swimming. Sure, we’ve had to choose between the two on a day by day, week by week basis, but coming soon… like before he starts high school in about a year and a half (holy shit!), he/we will have to make a decision; swimming and basketball run the same season in high school sports. Assuming he’ll do one or the other in high school, the decision will have to be made. We’ve talked about it; we know it’s coming. At the end of the day, whatever he’s going to want to commit to, will be the path taken; we still have a little time. Thing is, he’s pretty good at both, not to mention the other 3 sports he plays… haha. OK, back to the meet.
In the other two events that he had times for, the 50M backstroke and the 100M freestyle, he improved on his times. He didn’t finish first in those heats, but besting his personal time is always the goal. In the 100M breast stroke, he established a pretty good time, in his first official time swimming that one. All and all, not a bad day in the office.
The next swim meet will be in a couple weeks, then district, then state, assuming he qualifies. Meanwhile, back on the hardwood, there was one final, official event for his grammar school team; a 7th grade tourney at a local high school. There will be 3 games on Sunday back to back to back for the boys, to complete a swimming-bball weekend for my son. Sure, a bball tourney scheduled for my favorite football day of the year… haha; easy choice though. Away we go…
