January 21, 2017: Darling Dandy

As the Hawks, Blackhawks that is, do many times, they save us.  Friday night they saved me from the Bulls game.  We’ve already been over that slaughter.  The Blackhawks game had a much better outcome, although it didn’t look that way from the start.

I had taken off Friday from work, and spent a day with family.  Bowling was the choice of activity.  We had taken my son before, when he was about one and a half, to a birthday party at a bowling alley.   I’m sure he has no recollection of that.  This was the first time he will remember; he made it memorable.  Of course he was bowling with the bumpers, but the result was still impressive.  The lightest ball they had for him to use was 8 pounds.  He’s not quite 5 years old, so that’s pretty heavy… especially to throw down the lane for 20 frames.  He turned in an 89 in his first game, which we thought was pretty great.  The 2nd game was better.  He used 4 spares in a row, and 6 overall, to record a score of 133.  It took me to my 10th frame to beat that.  Crazy.  He already wants to go again.

So with the bowling followed by some free Jr. Frosty’s from Wendy’s, we headed homeward.  I knew it would be a critical night on the remote with both the Bulls and Blackhawks playing.  The Hawks started earlier, so we started there.

They got seriously outplayed in the 1st period, and really for much of the game.  I thought, why is that every Hawks game I sit down and zone into, they come out looking like crap.  That’s probably not so true, but those are the ones that stick out.  What also stuck out was the performance in goal.  And it wasn’t Crawford… although, after a blazing start to the season, he hasn’t been that great lately.  It’s nice to have someone like Scott Darling to fall back on.  He’d be starting for many other teams.

Will he be starting for another team next year?  Will he really take less for a backup goalie role with his home team in Chicago?  Both questions to answer after this year’s run.  He came up big on this Friday night in Boston.  He’s come up big pretty regularly.  Boston had plenty of good chances that he kept turning away.  He kept us in the game.

Better than that actually… you can’t lose a game when you give up no goals.  You can’t win a game when you score zero either, and that’s where this game appeared headed until just under 2 minutes to go.  I had completely zoned into the Hawks at this point after watching the first half of the Bulls game.  I was excited to see some 3 on 3 OT hockey and a potential shootout when the Hawks ruined it…

It was Hinostroza to Kero to Hossa for a beautiful game winning goal.  Vinnie has really impressed me, and so has this Kero kid.  I had to check where we got him from.  I thought maybe we got him as part of the trade for Saad, but it turns out that he’s been with the Hawks since day 1.  His pass between the defender’s legs went right to Hossa.  He didn’t miss.  He has certainly cooled from his hot start; it was nice to see him score again.  I liked when they panned to his dad in the press box; he pointed to the number on his sleeve and the name on the back… proud papa.

And proud Blackhawks fan once again was I.  This time Darling Dandy was the number one star, keeping us in the game, until we could finally scratch across a goal.  There have been a lot of close games this year that the Hawks have come out on top of.  Good sign for things to come?  Yes, I would say so.

Thank you indeed Blackhawks! You guys keep putting together great teams that are in it every year, and this year is no different. Scott Darling has been aWesome for the Bhawks, too. He came out of nowhere, is a hometown guy, and could be a starter in so many other places. The Bhawks are so lucky to have him to give Crow a rest when needed or start for extended games when Crow is hurt…such a valuable backup goalie. Will he get paid to go elsewhere like niemi did after 2010? Will he stay in Chicago to be a backup? Or could he even be the next starting goalie for the Bhawks…not sure about that with Crow signed through 2020. Either way, enjoy Darling now. Enjoy the Bhawks and their winning ways even more. GO BHAWKS!!!
