January 21, 2016: Lightning Streak

It was the rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup Final. It was a matchup of the best in the west vs one of the best in the east. It was the collision of two impressive winning streaks. The Hawks saw their 12 game winning streak come to an end on Thursday night in Tampa.

So what?  Exactly. Sure, it would have been nice to get the NHL record, and maybe we start another streak now, but the only streak I’m interested in is the 16 game one in the playoffs. Only one team gets to 16 wins in the postseason, and last year, it wasn’t the Lightning. Yeah, they got the best of us. They extended their steak to seven games, but more importantly, do they think if they meet us in the Finals again, they’re going to have success?  That would be stupidity.

These teams with good regular seasons. These teams with “superstars”. Where are they all when it counts?  Take the Washington Capitals for instance. Leading the Eastern conference is only a prelude to another postseason choke.  Ovechkin, best player in the league say some…zero Cups. The Lightning and Stamkos…ditto. They haven’t done what we’ve done.  We’ve earned our stripes. Regular season, postseason…we’ve been to the top of the mountain three times in six years. We’re the reigning Stanley Cup champs. You’re all still looking up at us.  Come get some.

So you broke our streak?  Talk to me in June please. One of the teams this night will still be playing.

I feel that overconfidence creeping in. That same way I felt in 2014. That ended badly, and because of that, I was much more humble through last year’s proceedings. Crawford still made some amazing saves tonight.  That guy has been something else this year. Earlier in the day, the Blackhawks showed another reason why they’re so good. They made a trade. First place in the West, on a 12 game winning streak, and we’re still trying to make the team better. I love it.

It’s a first class organization all the way around. That’s why it’s hard not to be overconfident. The star players, the stud goalie, the hall of fame coach, the awesome front office… Ok, let’s just try to stay humble.
