January 18, 2025: Saturday Gone Wrong

The NFL is the undisputed king of sports. Regardless if things go our way or not, we’ll keep coming back for more. Besides being a die-hard Bears fan, and watching them every week regardless of how bad they shit the bed, it spills over to the NFL in general. Regardless of the teams playing, the winners and the losers, we’re still watching, especially in the playoffs. Entering into Divisional Weekend, of course we’re locking in, as much as we can. The proceedings started off with the 2x defending Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs.

Is there anyone outside of Kansas City that likes this team? Even if you’re a Reid fan, which I am, or a Mahomes fan, which I’m not, don’t you have some Chiefs fatigue already? I’m sick of them. I know I closed my season happily when the Packers lost last week, but I want to ask for one more thing; please no Chiefs in the Super Bowl! I guess this is true with any team, other than my teams, that win too much; enough! I don’t “appreciate greatness”; I hate on it. Am I calling the Chiefs great? I guess by looking at their record, and accomplishments over the years, it’s hard to deny. The eye test, especially this year, tells us different. They’re not that good is what we hear; they get so lucky. They’re in bed with the officials. Even if all of those things are true, they still find ways to win games; they know how to win. And yes, the NFL protects their golden boy like no other… were some of those penalties on Saturday ridiculous or what? Playing the Packers year in year out, I’m used to getting screwed by the officials; watching the Chiefs, rooting against them, feels the same way. They get all of the calls, like they really need them. Aren’t they good enough to win without them, if they’re so great? I don’t think they would. Not sure if the Texans were the team to beat them, not sure if they would have won had some of those calls didn’t get made, but man… somebody, anybody, please. And then the whole point spread thing… I should have waited until game time to place my bet; I would have got 9.5 points. Instead, I placed my wager earlier, getting 8.5 points. When the Houston FG got blocked, I cursed; when the KC punter ran out of the back of the end zone to make the differential 9 points… I kicked myself. Sometimes getting the best number really makes a difference.

And then the Lions… I looked at this game, and thought… I should bet my whole account on the moneyline; there’s no way possible Detroit loses this game. They are a team of destiny. This is THEIR year. I knew my bet on the spread was looking pretty bad early on, but surely the Lions would come back and win this one right??? As I added in game plays on the Lions ML… Poof! And like that, they’re gone. What a downer for Lions’ fans? There are fanbases that get their hearts broken each and every year, but man… I just knew it was the Lions’ year; I wanted it to be. What a heartbreaker; what a shocker. And yeah, a small kick in the nuts to my bankroll… all I can say about that is, thankfully I didn’t put more. Why every time do I ramp up my wager do I lose? When will I learn to use that feeling and go oppo? I just can’t get over that hump… As for the Lions… another year without a Super Bowl, and now, they’ll lose both their coordinators. They will still be a good team, but this one hurts.

Yes, it was Saturday gone wrong in the NFL for me, kind of like many weeks. This time, seeing a team I really wanted to lose, win, and a team that I really wanted to win, lose… that sucked. OK, Sunday has to be better. Either way though, one thing is sure; we’ll all be watching.
