The 2019 Cubs convention is upon us; never been. I imagine at some point over the next handful of years I will be attending with my son. From what I’ve seen, I think he’ll really enjoy it. Not saying that I wouldn’t, I just think it should be all about the kids. It shouldn’t be laser focused on the Cubs leadership explaining things, or putting players on the spot asking them about another player’s problems. I appreciate the transparency, no doubt, but right now, especially with the Cubs, how can you question what’s happened the last 4 years?
We did watch the start of the convention on TV. Playing all the highlights from last year really brings back good memories. Obviously they led with the Bote slam; that really never gets old. My son and I have watched that highlight probably 100 times. The Heyward slam was cool too; I remember sitting on the couch with my wife watching that happen. Yeah, it would be better to watch postseason highlights, but it’s still nice to relive happy moments. I’m sure every team has their handful of highlights each year. But does every team do a convention? From a quick glance, it looks like they do. The Cubs convention was the first of its kind, leading the way in this area, now in its 34th year. I’m sure it wasn’t as popular then in 1986 as it is today in 2019. I wonder if someone has been to all of them? I’d like to talk with them.
One of the cooler parts for me is the return of a lot of ex-players. If you were an ex-player, why wouldn’t you come back? Getting shown all that love regardless if people actually remember you or not; looking at you Mike Remlinger…showing up late and all. Folks cheering for you just because you played with the Cubs for a portion of your career. Mike Fontenot and Les Lancaster were a couple of the more obscure guys that I liked. Of course seeing the players that were my favorites growing up is pretty cool. Jody Davis, Bobby Dernier, Sutcliffe, Trout (Mike’s dad…just kidding), Sarge… Those were my guys. I’d like to see Zonk, Jerome Walton, Mark Prior, and for some reason Damon Berryhill; those were some of my favorites too.

Baez would be on the list for sure; do they charge extra for autographs at the convention? I’m sure they do. It’d probably set us back a few bucks, but we wouldn’t have to stay at the hotel or anything like that, so that would save some dough. My son was watching some of it with me; he wasn’t asking to go yet.
It looks like a pretty cool event; we’ll put that on the list, just like Spring Training, although that may be tough for a while with my son in school now. I’m sure I’d enjoy both, but the best part of all, is watching the actual games. Can’t wait. Go Cubs!

The beginning of the 2019 season starts with the Cubs convention. Pretty cool that they started this event and are still going strong 34 years later. I have never been to the convention but think it would be cool one of these years. Maybe after the Cubs win it all again…this year? Good to see old players and current ones. Spring training would be another event to go to for the Cubs…one year. Cubs baseball is right around the corner. What will the predictions be? How will 2019 play out? Hopefully different than last year and similar to 2016! GO CUBS GO!!!
