We got some great news on Wednesday morning. Jimbo Covert made it to the Hall of Fame! He was very deserving. For a guy that made the all-decade team in the 80s at offensive tackle, it was a no brainer. I guess that’s what it should be for anybody on any all-decade team? In Jimbo’s case, to be one of the five best offensive lineman of the decade; that should be enough. It finally was enough.
Wednesday is the day I will typically drive to work; it was perfect. As I jumped on the expressway, the Score began their interview of Covert. He seems like a really good guy; very intelligent answers to every question. He seemed really excited, emotional about the whole deal, talking about how his family, friends, coaches, and all the guys he played with over his years flashed before his eyes. To be told you were one of the best ever to do what you dedicated your career to do has to be pretty special.
One of my favorite parts was when he talked about the best defender he faced. He said Lee Roy Selmon, but then he started talking about the guys he faced every day in practice. He said if he had to go against Richard Dent in a game situation, he probably would have been the best; just imagine the battles at practice these guys had. Next he talked about Dan Hampton. He talked about in college, a pass rusher would make one move per rush, and if you shut that down, you were usually good. Hampton had every move in the book, and he threw them at you every time he rushed the passer. Both Dent and Hampton are HOFers by the way. Next he mentioned Steve McMichael; is he the next of the 85 Bears to make the Hall?
It has to be either him or somebody else from that line; I’m thinking Hilgenberg. Guy I work with almost has the autograph of every one of those 85 Bears. He said when he got Jay’s, he didn’t even recognize him; he looks much different than his playing days. Hell, it’s been 35 years now… crazy.

Not too fricking shabby. Never knew about Ed Sprinkle, but from what I’ve read since, he was one of the guys who established the Bears identity on the defensive side of the ball. He was a terror… one of the original Monsters of the Midway; enough said…
Congrats to both of them. I was lucky enough to be alive during the 1985 season; can’t imagine if I hadn’t seen a Super Bowl victory in my lifetime. Hopefully that will change soon for all the young bucks. Even at 9 years old, I remember that season like it was yesterday. Covert and that OL, and of course Payton, helped that Bears offense rank as one of the best that year; yes, we were the shit on both sides of the ball.
I guess that was the one question I would have liked them to ask Covert during the interview; how was it blocking for Sweetness? I’m sure he’s on record talking about that already, and maybe he will some more during his Hall of Fame speech. Either way, great to see more Bears recognized as the greatest. Bear Down!!!
