January 16, 2018: Bye Week Check

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

50 points for the Blackhawks as they head into their bye week.  37 games to go.  Dead last place in the Central.  Currently 3 points out of the 2nd wildcard spot.  No word on when Crawford will return.  Happy 2018 Blackhawks fans.

Continuing the scary bye week check… the Blackhawks no longer have multiple games in hand on the current wild card teams.  We do have 1 game in hand on the Stars, but the Kings actually have 1 game in hand on us.  Although we do have 1 game in hand on the Wild who are between us and the wild card position, the other team between us, the Avalanche, have 2 games in hand on us.  There is no silver lining to find here when talking about how many games we’ve played and how many are remaining vs the rest of the wild card teams.

How did we get here?  The Hawks are ranked 10th in the NHL in goals per game.  They’re 22nd in goals against.  Both of those sound pretty good.  The record isn’t horrible at 22-17-6.  We know the power play sucks at 26th in the league.  Why the Hawks aren’t doing better in the power play is beyond me, but that doesn’t explain the whole season.  What gives?

13-2 when they score 4 goals or more is kind of what you would expect.  0-8-1 when scoring 0-1 goals is in line.  4-6-2 when scoring 2 goals & 5-1-3 when scoring 3 goals.  Nothing looks too out of whack… trying to figure out why we are where we are.

Even the whole Crawford thing… we’re now hearing that he may be out for the year.  Yes, that is a BIG blow; he was playing at an all star level.  He does have 16 of those 22 wins.  Yet, Glass and Forsberg haven’t been terrible.  Will the absence of Crow sink us completely?

There are also 7 players who have 20 or more points on the roster, so it isn’t all 1 guy, although Kane has far and away the most points at 45.  I know it seems like his line has been the only line working at times, but the Toews line has been a lot better.  Still trying to figure this out.

I’ve watched a fair number of games.  They look great at times, and unmotivated at others.  Inconsistency is our biggest issue?  If that’s the case, then does coaching carry that blame?  Surely we can’t pin our performance on Coach Q thus far.  What about Bowman?  Do we have enough talent on the ice?  Besides the horrible contract that Seabrook is under, and the trading of Hammer, what else are you pissed at Bowman for?  You’ve seen the actions done when we got knocked out first round last year; imagine if we don’t make the playoffs.

I just can’t figure this team out.  Is it just that the rest of the conference has passed the Hawks up?  If so, how do we get back on top?  At this point, I don’t think there is much that needs to be done honestly.  Stick to your guys… hope the old step up and the young grow up and the team gels, goes on a streak, makes the playoffs, and makes some noise.  That sounds like a plan.  Oh yeah, the backup goalies…

I’ve been nervous about the Hawks for a couple weeks now; I’m still nervous.  I just don’t know what exactly it is.  This team should be better.  This team can be better.  This team needs to be better.  Looking forward to the 2nd half.  Go Hawks!

Was pretty weird having the Bhawks off all week…seemed like the all star break, but it is just a new nhl rule that every team gets a week off during the season. Do the Bhawks need it? Maybe, based on their last place record. This team is hard to figure out for sure. Crow being down for extended time hurts…the whole year possibly? Ouch! Not sure what it will take to get the Hawks going, but they better find it soon. There are a lot of teams ahead of the Hawks that want that same playoff spot. A run is needed. Come back from the week off well rested and ready to string some Ws together! GO HAWKS!!!
