January 10, 2024: Low Hanging Fruit

posted in: Bears | 0

Well, it happened. Not sure if this was the “it” you expected and/or wanted… not sure if this is the first of multiple dominoes to fall, but the Bears took care of the low hanging fruit on Wednesday morning and sent Offensive Coordinator Luke Getsy packing. Bravo!

Are you not entertained? Do you want more blood? Many folks want Eberflus fired into the sun, but… I’m not one of them. Not saying I’m a huge Ebeflus guy; I wouldn’t have been devastated if he was canned as well, but he is staying, and I’m fine with it. What was his grade as a head coach? Let’s remember… don’t count last year when you’re telling me what his record was, because he did exactly what management wanted him to do. He lost games, to a tee (with an assist from Lovie), and got the Bears the #1 overall pick. In fact, this accomplishment secured THIS year’s #1 pick as well!!! We should be thanking Eberflus; yeah, I said it! If you want to talk to me about Eberflus, let’s talk about THIS year. Yes, he wasn’t the greatest head coach, but, and not to give this guy excuses, just stating facts, he had to be the Defensive Coordinator! For a first time head coach, to try to do both??? That’s setting somebody up to fail. And if you want to tell me he failed as a head coach, fine, but I’m here to tell you, he did NOT fail as a Defensive Coordinator; he performed that gig with flying colors. This Bears defense was outstanding down the stretch; do you want to reset there? The guys were playing for him, and yes, now that Eberflus is sticking around, we’ll need to hire a DC, but at least Eberflus will still have the influence there. Of course, the side of the ball that Eberflus (?) failed miserably, was on the offensive side of things. And oh yeah, we DID have a coordinator there… not any more.

This was the easy call. First off, maybe we should never hire another ex-Packer coach ever? Sorry, not sorry. It’s like when I’m building my fantasy football team, I will NEVER select a Packer. Not claiming any conspiracy theory here (or maybe I am), but the way we’ve performed, ESPECIALLY against the Packers… things that make you go hmmm. If at the very least, Green bay knew what the hell Getsy was doing, as did many other defenses in the NFL apparently. Not saying Justin Fields is a Lamborghini, but you don’t park somebody like him in the garage and not use him appropriately. Sure, maybe Justin isn’t ready for that high gear; some may say he’ll never be ready. But… I’m ready to give Fields another chance with a new OC… somebody who knows what the hell he’s doing. With this move, and the keeping of Eberflus, and I know maybe we were trying to keep this decision under wraps, but certainly points me to believe Fields is staying. Maybe you’re not happy with that either; personally, I’d be totally fine with that too.

Change was needed, but the fact that the Bears went from 3 to 7 wins cannot be overlooked. Yes, we expected more… I expected more. Was this really a 7 win team? Well, the facts tell me that. We could argue that they could have won more games, and at the same time, that we should have lost more and/or beat shit teams, but at the end of the day, you are what your record says you are. The Bears are not there yet; I know it’s hard to be patient… believe me. They still need to learn how to win, especially how to close out games; the plays we’re calling on offense have a lot to do with that. We fired that guy; we did the right thing. Did we do enough? The Bears are certainly not done yet. At this time, hopefully they’re entertaining a bidding war greater than any we’ve ever seen for that most valuable #1 pick, and Caleb Williams complete with his fitted gold HOF jacket. Do I hear 5 picks? 6? Good day today, much more to come. Bear Down!!!
