February 9, 2020: Staying or Going

It probably wasn’t good to think about this, after a tough loss on Sunday to the Jets, but I couldn’t help it. I want to believe the Blackhawks make the playoffs. I want to believe they can make a run. Wait a second, I thought I DID believe… well, the Blackhawks turned in a dud after going up 2-0 on Sunday in Winnipeg. And the roller coaster ride continues…

The trade deadline is coming up. It doesn’t make sense to take away from a team in the playoff hunt, one that has the potential to do damage like the Blackhawks do in my humble opinion. Yet, the playoffs are no guarantee, and, even if we do get there, what are the chances of winning a Cup? Surely making the playoffs again would feel great, but if the Cup isn’t likely in the cards for this year, we need to do whatever we can to improve the team going forward, even if that means sacrificing a bit in this year’s quest.

Are we able to trade someone, not impact this year’s quest that much, and get something of value back in return that can help this year and going forward? Good question. I think the answer is yes. I think that answer is Corey Crawford. I know, the fact that we have 2 great goalies makes me think getting into the playoffs may not be a short stay. I also know that not many teams have 2 great goalies; some teams don’t have 1 great goalie. We do agree that both Crow and Lehner are great, right?

The choice for the long term at goalie maybe doesn’t have to be made until after this season, however, if we move one of them now, we still have 1 great goalie for the stretch run, plus we add some real value to the team. To me, Lehner is the obvious choice moving forward… if we can agree on a deal. Nothing against Crow; I’ll always love Crow. But we can’t keep both of them… And Crawford, who I honestly thought may be retiring due to all the concussion issues, and is fortunate to make it to the end of this deal with the Blackhawks, is the guy that needs to be moved. If we don’t, we let him go for nothing after the year. You make the call.

Which NHL team is feeling pretty secure about their playoff spot AND can use a serious upgrade at goalie to make a deep run in the playoffs? I don’t know; I thought maybe you would know. But, there’s got to be a team that fits that bill. This team should also have a young guy that has shown promise, but maybe is not getting the playing time necessary to really blossom. It doesn’t matter what position. Is there a team out there that would make this perfect trade partner for the Hawks and Crow? I’m sure Bowman is on it.

Regardless of how the rest of this road trip goes, which continues on Tuesday night in Edmonton, the Blackhawks should make a move. I’m sure there are others that may fit this bill to a certain extent, but none that makes as much sense as moving Crawford. Staying or going? Bye Crow, no hard feelings. Go Hawks!
