February 9, 2017: Temperature Check

posted in: Bears | 1

Yeah, it’s February, and yeah, it’s pretty cold here today.  But come on, let’s face it:  we’ve had a very mild winter.  For all the talk of all this snow we were going to get this year… there hasn’t been measurable snowfall in Chicago for like 50 days and counting.  That storm that’s hitting the east coast right now?  It was all rain here.  A mild winter and not a lot of snow?  Can you say global warming?  But, wait, I forgot… that doesn’t exist.

But this isn’t about global warming or the temperature outside, it’s about the temperature of Bears fans.  The reason I bring this up now is because ticket prices have been raised… again.  This time, this hike takes place after a 3-13 season… the worst 16 game season in history for our Bears.  That doesn’t feel right.

But similar to the Bulls, we keep buying the tickets… we keep showing up to the games.  Well, at least all of the tickets are being bought.  If you went to, or watched any of the games at Soldier Field late last year, you saw a half empty stadium.  That’s not a good look.  What will next year hold?

Well, we now know that ticket prices will go up.  Will the product on the field be better?

There is no guarantee, but I think the answer to that one is a resounding YES.  I don’t want to sound like any of the Bears management or coaches, but injuries jacked us up last year.  For a team like the Bears, trying to turn the corner and get better from the top to the bottom of their roster, injuries really crippled us.  Now I do know it’s possible that we will have more injuries, but it can’t be as bad as last year, can it?  Let’s just hope the answer to that question is NO.  So automatically, by default, with less injuries, this Bears team will be better.  Fair?

OK, that brings us to this offseason.  With the 3rd pick in each round and the 3rd most salary cap space of any NFL team, it is inevitable that the Bears will add talent to the roster.  We can’t draft that bad, can we?  If last year was any indication, we should get some more difference makers from the draft this year.  That, plus some smart free agent moves, and yes, why shouldn’t I be excited about next year?

Well, that brings us back to the one big question mark for the offseason.  That question mark that is attached to the most important position in football.  What the heck are we going to do at QB?  I’ve talked a bit about it.  Here’s where I am at today.  Draft defense with the first pick, and trade our 2nd pick for Jimmy G.  I think that’s our best bet.  Whichever option the Bears go, as long as #6 isn’t part of the plans, personally, I will be a much happier Bears fan.

I want to take my son to his first Bears game next year.  I know the ticket prices are going up, and I know that looks crappy considering the season we’ve just finished, but I really do think this Bears team will be a lot better next year.  One of the most excited parts is looking forward to a new QB.  It’s time.

So I guess in my own temperature check, I’m not doing too bad as a Bears fan.  Yes, disappointed, frustrated for sure, but I think hopeful, this year, is starting to trump those.  Excited is even starting to creep in.  Don’t worry about the ticket prices.  You know if the Bears are good, you will pay whatever.  And if you don’t, somebody will.  That is our die hard issue.

We will love our Bears no matter what.  We will buy tickets no matter what.  We deserve better.  I’m ready to start seeing better about 7 months from now.  The temperature should be a lot warmer then…

Ticket prices going up after a 3-13 year. 6-18 record the last 3 years…where you ask? Yep, Bears home record at Soldier Field. Pretty disgusting and a slap in the face for raising the prices. The Bears better raise the talent on the field or Soldier Field will be empty like it was for so many home games this year. Yes, I think things will be better. Injuries cannot ravage the Bears worse than they did in 2016. The O and D should both be better. The qb better be someone other than #6. But the biggest thing is this offseason, both via the draft and with free agents. Time to up the ante Bears. You want to raise ticket prices, you better raise the level of excellency in the front office and the talent level on the field. Make the Bears great again!
    BEAR DOWN!!!
