Saturday brought the 3rd game of the year in our floor hockey season. At 1-1, I couldn’t wait for the kids to get back on the floor, especially after a tough loss on Wednesday night.
The game started off, and it looked to be a dogfight. The other team came out and dominated the play early, but with a few nice saves by our goalie, we ended the period still 0-0. We flipped the script in the 2nd period. Out of the 7 minute period, I swear the puck was in our offensive end for 6 of them. However, we couldn’t capitalize. After 2 periods, the score was 0-0. Onto the 3rd period…
My son wanted to play goalie again; it felt like he wanted to redeem himself. Although I told him he would definitely be in goal again, it may not be in this one; I had to let some other kids who wanted to be goalie get a shot. So between the 2nd and 3rd period, he asked me if he could be in goal. But another kid, the kid who has scored all but 1 goal for us this year, wanted to play goal. I told my son no, and suited the other kid up; he would get his first chance in net. Plus, my son had been playing a heck of a game so far. The other coach commented to me, what the heck got into him today? He’s playing like a beast. Yes he was. So instead of playing goalie, I gave him his first shot of the year at center. Puck drop.

This time, we were rewarded with our first goal of the game; 1-0 lead. Next my son shot one towards the net, that appeared to go in from where I was standing; no whistle though. The puck just sat there for a minute, before one of our kids pounced on it and slammed it in; goal! We asked the ref and the other coach about it after the game; they both said the puck just sat on the line. So it wasn’t my son’s first goal of the year, but it would be his first assist. The next one was a no doubter, as he fired it past their goalie. Just like that, it was 3-0. They finally struck, and made it 3-1. At that point, I beefed up the defense. We would score two more times anyways; final score 5-1.
It was easily my son’s best game of the year. He finished with 1 goal and 3 assists. He looked confident out there, possessing the puck, clearing the zone smartly, making nice passes, and taking many good shots on goal. He did a nifty move behind our net. As the defense shifted to one side, he turned and went the other way; it was pretty cool to see. He was excited, as was our whole team. We bounced back, and looked like a completely different team than this past Wednesday. At 2-1, we sit in 2nd place for the year.
I told everyone I talked to about his great game. I told him if he played like that every game, we would be a tough team to beat. With our two 9 year olds, the other 7 year old who plays ice hockey, and now my son, we have 4 really good players; honestly, the rest of the team is solid too. All 5 goals were scored by 4 kids who hadn’t scored yet this year. 6 out of our 8 kids have now scored goals. There is an undefeated team sitting out there; I heard they’re good, but so are we. Can’t wait to get out there again. Go Sharks!
