I was reading an article recently in The Athletic; well worth the subscription by the way. Plenty of good articles; one of my favorites is one of the Blackhawks writers Scott Powers. The premise was how to look at these last couple Blackhawks games; is the glass half empty or is the glass half full? Well, you know what I think…
The first 3 games after the All Star break and bye week have all been one goal affairs. The Hawks got the 2 points in the OT/shootout thriller in Arizona. They then lost in OT against the Wild in Minnesota, and at home against Boston. 4 points in 3 games is OK, right? With 28 games left, we’re talking about 37 more points for the year at that pace. That would put the Blackhawks at 95 points for the year. Would that be good enough to get in the playoffs? 95 points may not be enough this year… but the real question, are the Hawks good enough to make some noise?
What have we learned over these past 3 games? Well, something we already knew; the Blackhawks have 2 very solid goaltenders. They may not be perfect, but they will keep the Hawks in just about every game. And the fact that we have 2 guys we can be perfect at times, gives me hope if the Blackhawks do get into the playoffs. If one of those guys stands on his head, that could mean a series win. Win one series, anything can happen. But back to getting to the playoffs…

Do the Hawks need that line to produce to get to the postseason? One guy who has looked better and better as the year has went on is Kirby Dach. I think the Hawks picked a winner there. The skill is evident; once he fills out that big frame of his, and gets some more experience, watch out. My brother said he reminds him of Saad a bit; I went one step further. I think he can be like Hossa used to be with that puck; possess, possess, possess with that long reach… tough to get that puck from him.
What will the Blackhawks do at the trade deadline? That’s the next question. It depends on what Bowman and the other powers that be think about that glass. It’s different than if the Bulls were to somehow sneak into the 8th seed; they’d be done, no questions. The Blackhawks, and in the NHL in general, you get into the playoffs, anything can happen. The Blackhawks have the pieces, the experience and the goaltending, to make for a playoff matchup most teams would like to avoid. Or not…
It’s been the up and down year, but regardless of the OT losses in the past 2 games, it’s still trending upwards; my confidence is still there. The next stretch is key, starting with a visit to Winnipeg, a team that is 3 points ahead of the Hawks, on Sunday night. Go Hawks!
