On this “casual Friday”, how many of us represent at work with our Chicago sports gear? I definitely do. Right now, I have my Chicago Cubs hoodie on, and my Blackhawks ski cap is in my jacket pocket. This is my attire more times than not.
I’m pretty lucky that we don’t have to dress up at my job too often. This allows me to wear my gear 5 days a week if need be; God knows I have plenty of it to wear. I have so much, that I have to go through and donate stuff from time to time; you know, circle out some of the old, and circle in some of the new. Fact is, I don’t like getting rid of ANY attire related to my teams.
It’s great to see people walking around downtown with the Chicago teams as part of their attire. This is part of what I missed not living in Chicago for 5 years. It connects us. The one thing I was recently thinking about is, why don’t we acknowledge that? Like, if you see somebody else wearing a Bears shirt, say Go Bears, or at least give them that approving nod (maybe not so much this year). Thousands of us walk right past each other every day in this city, sharing allegiances, and displaying that, while not sharing an out loud acknowledgment; they always get the silent nod.
It’s totally different when you’re out of town. If you run into somebody else with Chicago gear on anywhere else BUT Chicago, you automatically verbally recognize it; at least I do. It usually breaks into a conversation of where you’re from, and a brief talk about this year’s team. Living out in LA, I would see individuals with Chicago gear on from time to time, and this would be the routine. On vacation anywhere in the US, especially Vegas, there is always somebody with a Chicago sports team displayed on their chest or head. It’s great. It’s great to share that with somebody else, especially when you’re far from home.

Speaking about far from home, even in other countries Chicago sports is known. On our honeymoon, on a cruise in Greece, a conversation broke out with some cooking students. Once they found out we were from Chicago, which wasn’t hard to tell since I had my Bears cap on, they knew exactly what we were talking about. Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls was the immediate link. They all knew Chicago because of him, and we smiled and said heck yes…. that was cool.
I remember even as a young kid, with my sports gear, always excited to wear it on vacation. Wherever we went, I had something Chicago in my bag… that is still true today. And when somebody asked if I was from Chicago when they saw my Michael Jordan shirt, I proudly said yes… born and raised. I wasn’t just some fan of the player, I’m from Chicago… those are MY teams. Some things don’t change…
So as I stock up my son’s sports gear collection, I intend to keep this thing going. He too will be happy to wear his Chicago gear everywhere we go; even that Cubs gear! I’ll be wearing my hat or shirt or jersey right along with him. In fact, most likely, our vacations will INCLUDE a trip to an opposing stadium to watch OUR teams, just like it was when I was growing up. It’s not hard to see where this passion started, and why it still burns strong today. What will I wear tomorrow? Think it’s time to rotate ski caps and break out the Bulls one…
