Wednesday brought our 2nd floor hockey game of the year. It kind of sucked we needed to wait a week and a half to play our 2nd game. After playing so well in the first game, getting our first win, we had our bye week. Bad timing I think, but who knew? Who knew we’d come out of the gate like that and play so well. I haven’t been used to that. Remember, with that 1 victory in week 1, we matched half our win total of the entire baseball and basketball seasons combined. Yeah, it felt damn good too.
Wednesday will be the night during the week we play. This was our first night game of the year. Hopefully we won’t play like this every Wednesday night. The hat trick kid from the first game looked like crap; by that I mean, he looked sick. He said he had missed a couple days of school this week; he definitely was not 100%. That didn’t stop him from scoring his 4th goal of the season, giving us a 1-0 lead. That was the score as the 1st period ended.
The 2nd period brought some interesting developments. One of our kids showed up between periods… without his jersey. The ref told me that meant a penalty shot for the other team. Great I thought, as I helped put the goalie pads on one of our kids playing goalie for the first time. Maybe I should postpone this until the 3rd period, but then I’d have to keep our kid on the bench until then. I said I would let him know. The period started, and the game was immediately tied. Our first time goalie was looking somewhere, not at the puck, as it glided past him in the net. At the next whistle, I motioned to the ref; they can take their penalty shot now. I didn’t think we had a chance in hell in stopping this. I assumed it would be their best kid taking the shot, against our first time goalie. He made the fricking save! Can you believe it? I ran up to him and congratulated him. It was a small miracle. As the 2nd period ended, the score remained 1-1; I thought that was a great sign.

Unfortunately, our team seemed to run out of gas in the 3rd period. Some bad decisions were made, including the go ahead goal we gave up. Our kid “cleared it” right in front of our net. My son didn’t have a chance. Then soon after that, we turned it over again… a few more feet away from our goal. My son probably could have stopped this one, but the kid made a really quick shot in the corner. 3-1 was the score; that would be the final.
It was disappointing after our season opening win, but nothing to be alarmed about. The game was pretty even other than the couple mistakes made on our defensive end, a teaching moment for sure. We’ll be back on the floor on Saturday to break up the 1-1 record.
