February 4, 2016: Safekeeping

posted in: Bears | 2

It’s time. It’s time to close out the special segment dedicated to those 85 Bears. What better night to do it on, as the 30 for 30 special on our boys will air in 15 minutes.

So they copied me. The 4 letter network…I had titled this blog special 30 for 30, meaning 30 blogs on this subject that is near and dear to my heart. Well, I guess I borrowed the term from them, but either way, I’m ending it here. So it’s really 24 for 30; there!

I’m getting ready for this premiere like a playoff game. I’m hyped up to watch it. I have my 85 Bears t-shirt on. Da Bears on the front, with Da Champs on the back with the Super Bowl XX symbol. I chose a Bears sports cup to pour myself  my drink for this evening;  only H2O…easy there.  Now I wonder if my son will sit and watch it with me. I’m recording it of course, so one day he will.

I lived through that year.  Even though I was only 9, I vividly remember many parts of that season, so as I spent many hours writing this feature, most of it, besides the stats of course, was from memory. Now I’m looking forward to the professional’s attempt at retelling one of my favorite sports stories. I heard they did a good job.  I’ll stop here, and finish this last entry after the 2 hour special. It’s time to relive the golden year of 1985, and show the rest of the world what we already know: that this is the best team in NFL history.

Awesome special. Really nicely done. Tears were definitely flowing.  Saw some stuff that I never knew. It was a very nice tribute.

There were some bittersweet moments.  The biggest we all knew back then was Payton not scoring a TD…before the real tragedies hit. That contributed to issues from that point forward. It’s easy to see how this thing fell apart. With all the personalities, and the massive, instant fame. It definitely became about me vs we as Ditka said. Not paying players, Buddy leaving, and McMahon’s injury all contributed as well. What should have been a dynasty, only lasted for one year.

What a special year it was though.  Regardless of everything, the missed opportunities after, the after football injuries and tragedies, every single one would do it all over again…wouldn’t trade it for the world. To be kings.,,to be the best..,to reach the top of that mountain, is unmatched. These guys weren’t just buddy’s heroes, they were our heroes…still are.

I could go on…trust me, but I’ll close this chapter for now. I’ll store it away like the most precious safekeeping.  I’ll store it in a place in my brain and heart that will keep this 85 Bears team immortalized forever. It will be there whenever I want to remember..,whenever I want to go to one of my happy places…just like the souvenirs from that year that remain safe at my parents house, and the full DVD set of every game that year, and now this 30 for 30 on the DVR.

And today, as I sit in my office, looking down LaSalle, I can see the parade now.  Today it is protesters, but 30 years ago it was the greatest NFL single year team to ever step on the field.  They were celebrating with the fans of our great city (my dad included). They were celebrating our first and still only Super Bowl title.  Of course I hope to see it again one day, but realize that we will never see another team like those 85 Bears.  They’re ours forever and can never be taken away.  We’ve seen the best and now we watch the rest.  Thanks for the memories guys.  Thanks for everything.
