February 3, 2020: Not So Super

posted in: Bears | 0

While everybody says what a great Super Bowl it was, everybody besides 49er fans, I’ll go ahead and say it was not so super. Maybe I’m just becoming a grumpy old man. Not yet, not yet…

What did I expect? What would have made it super? How would it have been better for me? Hahaha… Well, for starters, the Bears could have been playing in it; duh! Secondly, it would have been better if the guy that we’ve heard about all damn year because he was drafted after Trubisky wouldn’t have won the game or MVP award, but that ship has sailed already. I’m not even mad any more; maybe still disgusted a bit. Ah forget it… At the end of the day, they’re in the AFC, and the only reason I should be concerned about them is if we meet in the Super Bowl; I can only wish to have that problem some time soon. Sure, I would have liked the 49ers to win the game; I wasn’t heartbroken or anything that they didn’t. Feel bad for Robbie (both of them…), but other than that… I was happy for Andy Reid; I think he deserved it. You can no longer say he has the most wins without a Super Bowl trophy; who is that now by the way? OK, I looked it up, and I believe that answer is… Ron Rivera (76). Yeah, surprised with that one… He’s the active coach with that honor. Marty Schottenheimer has the most wins ever without a Super Bowl (200); I have a feeling that will be like that for quite some time.

I guess I wanted a game without any controversial calls… a game where the officials didn’t have to exert their control over it… a game where Papa Vegas had no say. I should know better. If any game is NOT going to be like that, it is the Super Bowl. The Kittle offensive pass interference… that was a very cheap call. I will say the fact that Shanahan didn’t call a timeout after they stopped the Chiefs on their last drive of the half was a poor decision; that’s called playing not to lose vs playing to win, like going for it on 4th down like Reid did. I guess there was a close late hit not called on Jimmy G… I didn’t see it. I started getting a bit bored with the game… put my son to bed… checked in later, to see the Chiefs take the lead on a bad call by the refs. Sure, would they have scored on the next play, another 4th down? Maybe. But that was a pretty quick TD call for something that didn’t really look like it. Then on the last drive that mattered for the 49ers, on 4th down, Jimmy G got racked in the helmet… no call. Worse than that, the announcers Buck and Aikman, didn’t even comment on it, after seeing the replay in slow motion in front of our faces. Pathetic. All in all, I guess it wasn’t so bad… there have definitely been worse.

A little surprised the Niners didn’t run the ball more than they did. Obviously Jimmy G was not up to the task on this day. The difference between the QBs was the difference in the game, although Mahomes didn’t even play that great compared to his other performances. Yet, it was enough to win the big one. Now he’s on his way to being the greatest QB of all time, or at least that’s what everybody says. Man, we just love crowning folks don’t we?

Congrats to the Chiefs and their fans. Congrats to Reid & Mahomes for their first Super Bowl. Good riddance to the NFL for another year. Big year next year for the Bears for a lot of reasons… I will have to wait, and that’s OK.
