Go ahead. Tell me the most famous Chicago sports athlete to wear the number 70. Yeah, you’re right; Joe Maddon wears that number, but that’s cheating. I’m talking about a player! There have been exactly 0 players for the Cubs that have worn that number. There have been no Bulls players that have worn that number. There has been 1 Blackhawks player: Dennis Rasmussen. There have been 3 White Sox: Rich Sauveur, Aaron Bummer, and Luis Avilan. Now the Bears have some guys… Henry Waechter! Yes, the guy who scored the final 2 points of Super Bowl XX with a safety. Although the search for uniform numbers is easy in the other 3 sports, the NFL is more difficult. Alfonso Boone is another. Maybe the most famous is Dennis Lick. An offensive lineman that went to my high school, and started his Bears career the year I was born. Tell me if you have somebody else.

Who the hell cares anyways right? Well, 70 is on the brain today. It’s my Dad’s birthday. And yes, it’s a milestone one. Yeah, we already celebrated. No, it wasn’t a trip to Vegas like my brother did for 40 with his buddies a few weeks back, one in which I didn’t partake in, or like my 21st with my Dad, which I did partake in. It was a modest celebration, but a really fun one. It was a pizza party with the large family; it was a really good time. I guess it’s just hard to believe he’s 70.

I’ve been around for more than half of his life; I guess we crossed that split about 14 years ago. Since then, a lot has happened. All of his kids grew up, got married, and had kids. How does anyone navigate through these life milestones? Well, I had my Dad, and of course my Mom; they’ll be hitting a milestone of their own soon. Being a boy and now a man, I took my life cues from him. Thankfully he was a pretty good everything: coach, teacher, friend. I couldn’t have got here without him. Sometimes I still wonder how I got here.

Going through life, and dealing with all its challenges, my appreciation for him grows. Yes, I’m not a kid anymore; I know my Dad isn’t perfect. Nobody is. Yet, he was the perfect father for me. He showed me what it’s like to do for your family, to put your family first. Something else I’ll be forever grateful for. So I try to follow that blueprint. I hope I can do as good as he did.

There are too many stories, way too many stories to share here, but I will leave you one. I guess it’s not really a story. It’s something he always told me; that I could tell him anything and everything, and that whatever it is, we will work it out. I did, and we did. We developed that trust. The type of trust that one day I hope me and my son have. That’s so important. So a few more things to tell you Dad. Thank you. Love you. Happy Birthday!

Man, time sure flies! As for #70 and sports, there isn’t a whole lot out there. Pretty surprising, actually.

As for 70 today, yep, Happy Birthday Dad! I, too, have been around for more than half his life, and thankfully, he has been around for all of mine! Of course, we already celebrated with a great pizza party with the family. As time goes on, the big birthdays are what they always have been…family time, and we could not have had a better Dad at the head of ours. I am truly blessed to have been given the perfect role model to follow. There is not a time in my life that I can say my Dad has not been there, and that is what it is all about…being there for the good, the bad, and the ugly. There is not a better example for me to follow, and I can only hope to be the best father to my kids like he has been to his. Way too many stories and memories to share here, but they are definitely thought of fondly, especially on your birthday. Be safe, stay smart, use your head…golden nuggets of wisdom that continue to this day. There will never be another one like you, Dad! You are the best! Thank you for everything you have done for me and for us as a family! Happy 70th Birthday, I Love You!

Damn, and I tried not to ‘mist-up’. Nice to read that stuff and know it’s the way you guys feel……still. Like you both said, “too many stories”, but the one that goes on and on is that we, even tho you both have grown and have your own families, actual still enjoy spending time with the old guy! Backatcha with thanx for making most of your growing years ‘fairly’ easy. Love you both…

BTW, who’s turn is it to plan this years golf trip>
