February 27, 2019: On a Wing

Coming off two gut shot losses, followed by two days off, the Hawks started a 3 game west coast road trip on Wednesday night in Anaheim. Needing 17 wins out of the next 19 games to get to 95 points and the playoffs, the Blackhawks welcomed a familiar face back.

Corey Crawford was back in the net for the first time in a long time. He looked good. The first goal he gave up was a complete fluke. The second one was a bad one; hey, he’s a little rusty. The third one…hey, I said he looked good, not awesome. Bottom line is he was back. All we can hope for is his continued health. With another year left on his deal, it would be nice to count on him, not only the rest of this year, but all year next year. I’m just not convinced. If I’m on the opposing team, and it’s a big game or playoff series, I’m running guys into Crow, sorry. Nothing too dirty, but don’t try too hard to stop yourself from running into him. OK, let’s forget about that for now…back to the game.

The Hawks had a goal on a five minute power play thanks to Caggiula getting face planted into the glass. They immediately cashed in with Cat; I just knew they’d score another. They got only one more shot on goal, plus gave up that shorty to tie the game. Anisimov broke the tie; sweet goal by the way. What’s this guy’s deal? Is he back next year? He has shown flashes, just inconsistent. Another one to back pocket for later, because, hey, we’re not done yet in 2019!

After the Ducks scored 2 in a row, and with the Hawks facing a loss that might as well end their season, they woke up. Toews with a beautiful pass to Brinksy for his 2nd and a tie game. Then it was the Captain starting the game winner with a pass to Saad who set up none other than Kane for the W. Boom! Big time players make big time plays as my brother texted out. The Captain with two huge plays. Saad with a phenomenal reception and dish to Kane. And Kane, you knew where that puck was ending up. Big time win.

The Hawks found a way. They won a game they should have won; they won a game where they were looking at an L. The season is still alive…hanging on a wing and a prayer. And you know what, it’s fun. Since that latest long winning streak, it’s been fun again. Just the idea of these guys pulling a playoff spot out of their ass is exciting. Will it happen? Logic tells us no, but logic doesn’t always win out. 16 more wins to go boys. Go Hawks!

Welcome back Crow! A little too late this season? We shall see, but it was good to see him in net again. 1 year left on his deal with the Bhawks should be one of those play for pay years that guys have. Hopefully, he can stay healthy and help the Bhawks all year long. Down 3-2 late in the 3rd, the Captain stepped it up and made a sweet pass across the crease to the Cat, who buried it for his 2nd of the game and 36th of the year…wow! Then, with time running out and OT almost certain, Toews made another beautiful feed to Saad who made a sweet move to turn things into a 2 on 1 odd man rush with who? You got it…#88. Saad to Kane for the GWG and #40 on the year! Bhawks win! Big time players make big time plays, and the dynamic duo along with saad and the cat have been doing it this year. 18 games left and a whole lot of ground to make up still. Will the Bhawks do it? Stay tuned as we are coming down the stretch! GO HAWKS!!!

I read recently where Kyle Long re-structured his contract to give the TEAM more cap space. Hmmm, maybe some of the big contracts for aging(slowing) vets should take note! Like 2 & 7. They’re both holding big contracts with time left here, maybe they should think TEAM, and do something like Kyle. I do appreciate the things they’ve done for the Hawks in the Championship seasons, but really, they have to man-up to the fact that they’ve lost a stride or three. Can’t have that in a D-Man. Not with the young speedy guys coming up and coming in every game. Then to make it more obvious, we’re putting them on the ice at the same time???!! You think other teams don’t see that and lick their chops at the lack of speed on the back end? Their lack of speed is what keeps us from having our D-men at the point when we’re in the O-Zone. They can’t press when they can’t get back in time. Just sayin’
