February 27, 2017: Al Gone

I’m kind of surprised that the Bears aren’t tagging Alshon Jeffery.  I’m not devastated, just surprised.  This could very well mean that Alshon is Al Gone.

It was my opinion that they should tag him.  We all know, that when he was on the field, for the most part, he was a beast.  But of course, there in lies the problem.  Injuries are a part of Alshon.  Hoping for him to get through a full season without injury, sounds like a long shot.  This would be the exact reason why we wouldn’t pony up for a long term, big money deal.  A one year franchise tag would be a lot less risky. Yet, what would one year prove?

So if he got through the year, and played all 16 games, and had an all-pro season, and the Bears made the playoffs, would we pony up?  That would be the reason to tag him in my opinion.  Obviously, if he had a so so year, missing some games, then we’d cut ties. No long term contract tying us down. Sounds like a pretty good plan, right?

Well, maybe Alshon’s career year would be a fluke. Maybe he’d go back to what he was before his big, get paid season. Maybe the Bears have already decided that Alshon is not part of the long term plans.  I wouldn’t be heartbroken.

It would leave another area of need for us. Yet, with that 17 or so million saved on Alshon, adding to our already impressive cap space, we’d almost have to go out and bring a WR in.  That would mean we’d have to go after 2 of them, since even with Alshon we needed one.  Then there’s Kevin White…

He’s one more injury year away from being labeled a complete bust, if he isn’t already.  What can he be?  Is he the number one WR we need?  That seems far fetched at this point; a number two at best?  Meredith had a good year last year; another number two at best?  So we’re down a number one WR; what’s the plan?

That’s what I would be interested in.  Like with any of our teams, all I want is a plan.  How do we fill the Alshon void?  Throw in the suspension last year, on top of all the injuries, and maybe that void isn’t as big as we think.  Was he ever really comfortable playing here?  I’ve heard rumblings around that.  He did guarantee the Super Bowl next year, didn’t he?  Well, if the Patriots end up signing him, then maybe.  Or worse yet, the Packers?

Yes, the fear is he goes elsewhere, does awesome, and makes us look bad.  But there’s also the possibility of him never being able to play a complete season.  That’s why I thought the tag would be smart; it buys us one more year, allows one more year of evidence, before we make our final decision.

It appears we’ll be heading another direction there.  Again, not devastated…  As long as we cut ties with the other guy.  You know, the guy were supposedly trying to trade…or wait, the guy who may retire.  Just tell me when he’s not a Bear any more, and I’ll really be happy.  Al here, Al gone, don’t matter.  I guess I trust in Pace and Fox more than GarPax.  I guess that’s not saying much.  Ready to see the 2017 Bears.

I think the Bears should franchise alshon. Yes, he would be the highest paid wr in the nfl, but it is only for one year and the Bears have the cap room. Even if he has a great year, that does not mean the Bears have to sign him long term. The Bears have too many holes to worry about. WR is one of them even with alshon. Without him makes it even bigger. But what do I know? Pace and fox dont think he fits in 2017 and wont franchise him, so be it. Just be ready to fill holes all over this roster. Use the cap room wisely, not just because it is there. Make the Bears better, with or without alshon. This is the last chance for pace and fox in my eyes. They screw these decisions up, they should be gone. Long way off from football, but plenty of work for the Bears to do meanwhile. BEAR DOWN!!!
