February 26, 2016: World Class

It’s what good teams do.  No, it’s what great teams do. They’re always looking to get better. Last place, first place, or on that edge, great teams always look to get better.

The 3-time Stanley Cup winner in the past 6 year team, our Blackhawks, did it again. Not resting on their place in the standings. Not staying pat with their talent laden roster.  No, that’s not good enough. The only thing that IS good enough is raising another Cup. The Hawks improved their chances by adding ex-hawk Andrew Ladd.

This one is extra good. Not only is he a great player…a captain on his now ex-team, he’s an ex-Blackhawk…a member of the first Cup team in my lifetime back in 2010. Once you win a championship with a team, you’re never forgotten. I’d argue that Niemi and Byfuglien were missed more the following year, but Ladd is no slouch.  Oh yeah, now he gets to play with Toews and Hossa when he gets back. What’s not to like about this move from either side?

This attitude, this culture is present throughout the organization.  Whether it’s Bowman doing his thing, Coach Q never being satisfied with his team’s performance, or a serious team captain known for winning, this Hawks team checks off all the boxes.  This Chicago team is world class.

And you know what, it feels good. Too many times we see this from other franchises. Whether it was the Red Wings or Yankees back in the day, or the current day Patriots, it’s great to be at the top of your sport.  It’s great to have a franchise willing to do whatever it takes to win. One that puts so much effort, that cares so much about winning.  Not just winning, but winning it ALL…and anything else is just not good enough.

I’m hoping it spreads to our other teams. The Cubs seem on the right track, but they haven’t won anything yet. The Sox do try, I’ll give them that. They try to balance rebuild with staying competitive, but that’s not an easy task.  The Bulls have made bad moves. For all the talk of Reinsdorf loyalty, he sure chucked Thibs quick. The Bears…I haven’t liked some of the moves, but it’s still too early in this regime to give a final grade. That brings us back to the Hawks.

A lot has to go right to get where they’ve got. You have to draft well. Those draft picks need to pan out.  You have to make shrewd moves, balancing to the cap while keeping the coffers full. You have to trade to get that player that will push you over the top while not sacrificing the future. They’ve done a glorious job.

Will this pan out come June?  We don’t know this for sure, there are no guarantees, but when you put your team in the best position to succeed at all times, the chances are much better.  3 in 6 years is good… 4 in 7 will be better.  Go Hawks!

The Blackhawks are definitely the cream of the crop in the nhl. Bringing back ladd reinforces to the entire staff and team what the only goal is this and every year, not to mention to us fans…winning the Stanley Cup! I will take the Hawks top 2 lines vs any other teams. Not so much noise about losing sharp or saad now. Like you said, shrewd moves need to be made, and the Hawks moves seem to be turning to gold more times than not. Back2back and 4in7 would be icing on the cake. Keep that Cup in sweet home Chicago!!!
