It felt like spring this week in Chicago, but today, brought back the winter. We knew better. With snow flurries falling outside, it is really nice to turn on the TV and see the Cubs playing their first Spring Training game today in beautiful Mesa, Arizona.
Today is, of course, the first time that the Cubs are back on the field since Game 7 of the World Series. Anybody remember that game? Yes, and when Len Kasper gave us an introduction to the reigning World Series champions, it was official. It feels damn good. I’m not going to get tired of that.
The A’s were the opponent in our first Spring game. And leading off for the A’s was none other than… Rajai Davis. He was this close to being the most hated player ever around these parts. I can talk about it now. I didn’t even cringe when they showed the highlight. No, I have no hard feelings towards Rajai. His home run off Chapman in the 8th inning of Game 7 is simply a footnote to history. His RBI in the bottom of the 10th did no harm, thanks to Montero’s insurance single. Yes, Rajai tried, but came up short in his quest to add to the long heart breaking history of Cubs fans.
It’s strange to look back on a Cubs season and not feel heartbreak. I’ve said it before, and I’ll probably say it many more times, but this feels weird. It’s a good kind of weird. Thinking of 2016 and the way that season ended, brings the ultimate joy. There is no coulda woulda shoulda. There are no what ifs. No, those questions belong to another major league team. I’m sure the Indians and their fans know what I’m talking about.

If Embrace the Target was the slogan last year, what will it be this year? I think Uncomfortable is what Joe is rolling with now. Embracing the target may never be more true than this year. Everybody will be gunning for the Cubs. With the same stacked team, and same expectations, teams will get really sick of the Cubs really quick. I’m sure all those eternal Cubs haters, and all the new Cubs haters, would love nothing else than for 2016 to be the only World Series we see in our lifetime.
One thing is sure; we’ve seen it. It’s happened. So say whatever you want about the Cubs, because we’re champions. Nobody can take that away. And when the Cubs repeat this year… it’s going to be mighty tough on those haters. I knew it would be some rough times ahead for them.
But even the haters can’t get me down. The Cubs are defending World Series champions, and they are back! Anything to help us forget about the Bulls. We’re back to baseball, and it feels so good.

Spring training is here and so is preseason baseball. It is hard to believe that almost 4 months have past since the Cubs won game 7 of the world series to become Champs! Now, they are defending their title and will have that target on their back all year. Yes, the biggest pressure is off after winning it all, but the expectations are still there. The target, the scrutiny, and the 162 game long season will test the Cubs all summer long. Back to back anyone? Why the hell not, the Cubs are young, talented, and embracing their new roles in the mlb. Enjoy being back on the field together Cubbies and embrace being the defending Champs…if the Cubs could be loveable losers for 108 years, why not be loveable winners for 2 years in a row??? GO CUBS GO!!!
