February 25, 2016: Already Over

posted in: Cubs | 2

I really never had a chance.  I tried, but after today’s events it’s already over.

I tried to be calm about it.  I tried not to fall into the hype machine.  I tried to keep my emotions in check… after all, it is a 162 game season.  My defense mechanism went into action.  I predicted a worse season this year for the Cubs with 90 wins… trying to control my expectations… and emotions.  Trying not to put all my eggs in one basket… not buying into this IS or HAS to be the year.  World Series favorites?  Let’s see them play some games first.  Breathe.

It’s already over.  Did you see what the hell the Cubs did today?  I know, I know… it’s not like we brought in an All Star or future Hall of Famer, but just the way it all went down… crazy… crazy good.  I kind of wanted Dexter back, but thought he’d for sure be gone.  After reading yesterday that he had signed with the Orioles, it was official… or was it?  My wife texted me, and said there was some Cubs news.  She said Fowler and Coghlan… or at least that’s all I read.  I already knew about Fowler resigning with the Orioles, but did not know about Coghlan getting traded.  But wait a second… she said Fowler resigned.  I did a double take.  She sent me the twitter link to click on, with the press conference and the on-field introduction.  Awesome.

The first feel good moment of the season has taken place.  With all the Cubs in uniform on the field going through drills, Theo brought out a little surprise.  It was Dexter Fowler in street clothes, and the deal was for 1 year 8 million.  He’s back.  Just seeing all the players going up to him… high fives… punches to the grill… hugs.  It’s no wonder why he wanted to be here.

He wants to win.  This is now the 3rd or 4th player that turned down less money to be a Cub.  Heyward, Zobrist, Lackey (?), and now Fowler.  It was even less than his qualifying offer.  And yes, Dexter still has one eye on the money ball, but his heart was here.  With next year’s free agent class looking less formidable than this year’s… still figuring in to cash in on a deal, he chose to delay it.  He chose to delay it, of course nothing is guaranteed, for a shot at history… a Chicago Cubs World Series Title.  It gives me shivers just typing that.

So here I am, in my office getting off a conference call, smiling from ear to ear… texting my brother… talking to a co-worker… wanting to see the Cubs play… right NOW.  When does the season begin again?  Not soon enough, let me tell you.  The emotions are already flowing out.  Seeing this signing, the surprise of it, the way it was announced, the adjusted opening day lineup in Anaheim…. Fowler CF Heyward RF Rizzo 1B Bryant 3B Soler LF Schwarber DH Zobrist 2B Montero C Russell SS….  wow!

Yes, nothing is guaranteed… but this IS.  This is going to be one hell of a season.  The expectations are already through the roof.  The pressure cooker is on.  The curse seemingly will be challenged.  Will we be disappointed after 162… or after a postseason series… or will we be witnessing what most of us have never seen?  I don’t even really want to think that far ahead… I have to pace myself for God’s sake… we haven’t even played one spring training game yet.  Breathe.  Deep Breath.  Breathe…. Nope… too late… it’s already over.

Welcome back Dexter! He feels it like all of us do. The end of the curse is not near…its here! Not afraid to say it this year, to hell with bad luck, we have had enough! Very smart move by both the Cubbies and Dexter. All we need now is something to happen to bring them all together….

Question now becomes what to do with players like David Ross, is he taking up space?? I would feel a lot better if Willson Contreras was part of the starting 25. Jorge Soler should be a starter, but what if Kyle Schwarber has a strong defensive spring? who can forget Javier Baez, who I thought was a strong candidate to be traded, what if he sures up the K zone and starts batting for average as well as power. Do we really want a 25 HR guys as a utility player? Arismendy Alcantara a switch hitter, which means he can pinch hit in all situations? All very good problems to have. I realize INJ will take out a few players, but in the outfield, we are good, infield..stacked. Only question, will our starters hold up for 30-33 starts this year? Its going to be a hell of a season with a very, very interesting spring.

Something in my gut tells me we are one “pitcher” away and who knows, maybe someone worthy wants to jump on the Chicago CUBS ride…

This just shows what a culture change has taken place with this Cubs team. Winning cures all, but players actually want to be with the Cubs and are taking less money to do so. They want to be a part of history and are excited about the Cubs chances. Not to mention how Theo walked dexter out, and the whole team celebrated. The chemistry is already flowing, and so will the champagne later this fall! GO CUBS GO!!!
