February 24, 2022: Feels Good

How good was it to see the Bulls back in action on Thursday night at the UC? I know it must have felt good for Trae Young to spend some quality time with Papa Ayo. Actually, Trae may have nightmares about that kid. Ayo put the bracelets on him, as he kept trying to throw his head back and draw a foul. One sequence in particular stands out, that is, besides the time when Ayo crossed Trae and had him looking stupid. The one that comes to mind is when Trae tried to drive in, he stopped, leaned into Ayo, threw his head back, threw himself to the ground, missed the shot, and didn’t get the foul. Meanwhile, Ayo grabbed the rebound, pushed it up the court, flew past the defense, and laid it in for a layup. Trae was trailing him the whole way, after picking himself off the floor trying to get a call. Tough night for Trae; great night for the Bulls.

DeMar DeRozan… yeah, what more can we say? Well, the undisputed leader of this team did it again, extending his already never been done 35 point/50% shooting streak. He also tallied 35 points for the 8th straight game, trailing only MJ by 2 games in this category. Holy crap! Any time you’re on a list with MJ, you’re doing something right. When it came down the stretch, and the Hawks weren’t going away, it feels good to know we have the closer ready to do his thing. He actually got some rest in the 4th quarter prior to the homestretch. I think we’ll see more and more of this with the guys coming back. Imagine a FRESH DD?!?! Can it be better than the version that has been carrying the injury depleted Bulls thus far this season? Heck yeah it can. He got in his spot, turned away from the double team, and hit an AND 1 jumper to give the Bulls the lead. Huge… fricking huge!

There were other contributions of course. The close out by Vooch on the following Hawks possession was huge. The rebound and 2 free throws by Javonte to seal the game were huge. And how about the new addition? I didn’t see any Kardashians in the house, but I did see Tristan Thompson giving us a glimpse of what he can mean to this Bulls team. His first bucket a dunk on a roll to the hoop. Another ferocious dunk later in the game after a rebound. Some very visible emotion. Yeah, we may like this guy. Another component to this pickup is toughness, something the Bulls may have been lacking a bit. Physicalness and toughness… both important come playoff time. TT brought it in his first appearance; think about the options if he can continue to contribute like this. Guarding the big men that have given us problems, like Embiid. Being part of a lockdown defensive unit down the stretch a la Taj Gibson back in the day. OK, OK… let’s not get ahead of ourselves, but damn… big time win to start the 2nd half of the season.

As my wife said 9pm, time for bed… I convinced her to let my son stay up to watch the end of the game; she did. Bulls won, so… We may have to stick with this script down the stretch, and definitely come playoff time. Sure, he may be a bit tired for school the next day, but if the Bulls are winning… Hey, everybody has to do their part. Who’s next? Go Bulls!!!
