As if a single shot wasn’t enough… a double shot surely will put you on your ass. The Blackhawks took two to the chin this weekend. With 2 games at the UC against teams going for that same wild card spot, there was just no way we could come out of this weekend with zero points; that’s exactly what happened.
The drive to 95 is not looking good. It’s going to take 17-2 from here on out to get there. Maybe it won’t take 95 points to get into the playoffs, so the above target may change a bit… but to what realistically? We knew it was going to take a heck of a run to get there, but now… even more… the Blackhawks are squarely behind the 8 ball now.
So what happened? Did the Hawks play that badly? I didn’t see any of the two games in their entirety, but from what I did see, and from what I did read, they played pretty decently. They were in each of these games in the 3rd period before letting them both slip away. I listened to the final period of the weekend. After scoring the game tying goal on a power play, one in which Troy Murray criticized the Stars for taking a poor penalty, the Hawks turned around and gave it right back… twice as nice. A “too many men on the ice” penalty was the start of it, then Duncan Keith got called for tripping, and that setup the 2 man advantage. The Stars took advantage, grabbed the lead, and won the game. But not after we had a 4 minute power play to essentially end the game. I was cheering when they said Kahun was bleeding, but… the Hawks couldn’t capitalize, and now, the season is grim.

In my head, I see it kind of like holding in the NFL; it can be called a lot during a game. Yet, only when it is blatant, or when the puck goes in that vicinity, is the whistle blown. Not sure if that is entirely accurate, but that’s what I’m rolling with. That being said, you have to be smarter than that down the stretch in one of the biggest games of the year. Who does that fall on? The guy that didn’t get off in time? The coach? I need to ask Eddie O this stuff. It’s frustrating to see the game decided on something like that. The Hawks with their razor thin margin of error can definitely not afford that stuff.
Well, it was nice while it lasted. The Hawks certainly gave us a much needed jolt of excitement after the Bears went down, and the Bulls sucked hard. Maybe they’ve got one more burst left? The Cubs are back, so even if this is it for the Hawks, we’ll be back in Wrigley in no time. But wait, there’s more… anybody see what the Bulls have been doing? Maybe they’ve got a burst in them…

Double shot to the dome. These 2 losses hurt, especially to not even get 1 point in either. Double shots are no fun no matter when you take them. They especially hurt at this time of year. The Bhawks had worked so hard to get back to .500 and in the playoff race, but those chances took a big hit this weekend. Not capitalizing on power plays and giving up power plays are tough pills to swallow. Too many men on the ice is not a good penalty to take…should not be that hard to only have 5 guys on the ice. So 19 games left and 5 points behind with multiple teams vying for those spots. Maybe the Bhawks used too much gas getting back to this point? Maybe they will run out of steam down the stretch? Who knows, but I do know that they have been playing a lot better hockey to get back to this point. Time to finish strong and see what happens. GO HAWKS!!!
