February 24, 2018: Not Our Day

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

After starting 3-0 and beating three of the teams in the league, we’ve lost 3 straight to get to 500.  This is definitely an unexpected turn in the season.

It started off with a tough OT loss, which is totally understandable.  I think we beat that team more times than we don’t.  But then we faced the final team in the league, the best team in the league.  Even that first contest was a barn burner; 2-1 was the final.  Classic game that could have went either way.  Well, this Saturday featured a rematch with the only undefeated team in our league; it could not have went either way.  It was a good old fashioned butt kicking.

No excuses really.  We had all of our kids.  They were just flat out better than us.  6-0 was the final score.  How did this happen?

As we got ready for the game to start, the coach said to suit up my son; he’ll be the goalie in the first period.  I was worried.  This was the team shooting pucks on net from half court.  My son got better the last time he played goalie, but I wasn’t 100% confident.  Thankfully, he had one of our best defenders in front of him.  She helped clear the puck numerous times.  There were still a handful of shots on net, and a handful of near misses.  The score after the first period was 0-0.  Whew.

Then the outburst came.  3 goals in the 2nd and 3 goals in the 3rd.  We couldn’t really even muster up any good chances.  We had a few, but their goalie was pretty decent.  It was a game to forget, but I have a feeling that it won’t be.

There was a bit of drama after the game, surrounding the son of the opposing team’s coach.  He was slashing throughout the game.  Maybe I don’t have the trained eye yet for hockey, as I watch all the kids scramble for the puck, but… two of our kids were nicked up courtesy his sloppy stick.  The ref corrected him late in the game, and the coach came out to let him know that only HE will be correcting his son.  After the game, the mother of one of our hurt players along with the head coach confronted him about it.  I was standing right in the middle with the park folks.

The consensus was that he should have been pulled out of the game if he couldn’t control his stick.  The argument was that he is 5 years old and he is getting better.  I get both sides, however, IF kids are getting hurt out there, that is where the line has to be drawn.  The other coach also threw in the comment “don’t be sore losers”…

It wasn’t a good ending to a horrible game.  This is the first time since my son has started playing that things got heated.  They are only 4,5, and 6 year old kids… so… the safety MUST come first.  The kid that can’t control his stick on the floor can learn how to do so without hurting other kids.

If we see this team again, it will most likely be for the championship.  If that happens, break out the popcorn.  In the meantime, back to the drawing board this Friday night.

Sounds like one of those games to just forget about immediately and get ready for next week. Always drama not matter the ages. Some parents and even kids at that age really get into it. When kids are getting hurt, that will almost certainly raise the temperature levels. If the kid cannot control his stick and is slashing/hurting other kids, he should not be playing. Yes, he has to learn, but not at the expense of hurting others. Sounds like the next meeting could be very interesting…hope it is for the championship and the Sharks get some payback! Back to winning next week, please…GO SHARKS!
