February 24, 2015: Checking In

posted in: Bears | 2

Why is it that whenever I turn on sports radio, although they have been talking Bulls and Blackhawks, and now Cubs and Sox, that the Bears still dominate the air waves?  Sometimes I get kind of sick of it.  Why are we still talking football when we have two awesome teams playing right now, and two pretty exciting baseball seasons to look forward to?  Then I remind myself that the Bears rule this city, more than any other team.  I’m going to make myself sick and check in on them today.

Maybe this year more than ever, we want to talk about the Bears to get that bad taste out of our mouth.  Man, was last season ugly.  Maybe we’re talking more about the Bears this year because of all the changes that are happening up at Halas Hall.  With a new GM & coaching staff, and plenty of roster changes ahead, it’s going to be a whole new team on the field next year, and that’s a good thing.

One of the biggest changes is the switching on defense from a 4-3 to a 3-4.  I’m pretty excited about it.  When I was still playing Madden, I loved to run the Bears out there in a dynasty league, and build my defensive roster to fit the 3-4 scheme.  There are certain pieces that you need, and the Bears need a lot of them.  We may already have our man in the middle, with Jeremiah Ratliff and even Ego Ferguson.  That being said, they’re still looking at DTs in the draft.  Really, you can’t go wrong in the draft with ANY defensive choice.  Briggs is gone.  Tillman is gone.  You know the situation at safety, and LBs are thin.  This draft is really, really key for us.  We have to expect most of the players we draft to play… THIS year, especially on defense.  It’s pretty cool that the draft this year is here; I have to try to get there.

Then there’s the offense.  Is Cutler staying or going?  Is Marshall staying or going?  And then there’s talk about Forte too…  I don’t give two craps about Cutler and Marshall, and hope by some stroke of luck they’re both gone, although they’ll both probably be back; I’m prepared for that.  But let me tell you, Forte better still be here.  Yeah, I know the argument about RBs, hitting a wall, not getting that 3rd contract with the same team…  I don’t want to hear it.  You’re going to tell me that at the age of 30, he still doesn’t have a few good years left in him?  Forte has been the Bears offense the past few years, and with John Fox and his focus on the RB, why would we move him?  He’s one of the top RBs in the NFL.  He may be one of the reasons we stay competitive next year.  In the last year of his deal, he’ll be looking to extend NOW.  Sign him to 3 more years, heck even 2 more; what is 2 years in the big scheme of thing?  Make him happy, and deal with the rest of the problems on this roster; he is not one of them, don’t make problems with him.

Then there’s the NFL combine going on.  I used to LOVE watching that.  I’d be glued to NFL Network watching that stuff.  This would be a great year to watch it, considering the high draft pick that the Bears hold.  What about QB?  If Cutler is somehow not here, or even if he DOES stay here, do we need to look at that position?  If Winston or Mariota fall, do we grab one of them?  It probably won’t happen, and most definitely won’t happen with Winston, but you have to consider all options.  Other than QB, maybe somebody later on, it should be pretty much all defense.  The WR position IS a deep one this year, and IF Marshall is gone, maybe we need to take one of those guys too.  It will be interesting to see it play out, and see this regime’s first draft pick.  I remember Emery’s first draft pick not too fondly…

So there… there’s your Bears fix.  Now I need a baseball fix.  Regardless of how exciting the Bears offseason is, this upcoming baseball season trumps that… for me… for now.  Still, somehow the Bears still rule.  The NFL is still king, and that makes the Bears kings in our city.  Personally, I’m glad we have other options.  Although I love the Bears, I love our other teams as well.  Who do I love the most?  That sounds like a future blog post…

Is that offer for the draft still good? HAHAHA

Yes, the Bears need a lot of help. If cutler and bmarsh stay, you draft all defense. I am not a fan of winston or mariota, so if cutler is gone, take a late round flyer on a qb with some talent. If bmarsh is gone, do the same at the wr position, preferably someone fast who can maybe do some kick and punt returns. Other than that, get a bunch of playmakers on defense to start getting the Bears back to being Monsters of the Midway!

Also, forte has to stay. Lock him in for 2 more years and see what he can do with the new coaching staff…unleash the Bears’ beast!

Bears sports radio is insane. Total homer town bias and completely overdone daily across the airwaves and newspapers. Then again so is the rest of the NFL.
It doesn’t matter what defensive scheme your in if you don’t have skilled players. A 3-4 can be beaten just like any other.
Get rid of the cancer on the bears. Probable stuck with Cutler, but you can let Marshall go real easy and use that money for somebody less concerned about whats going on after their football career. Bears need guys focused on FOOTBALL, not themselves.
