February 23, 2019: Calling Off the Dogs

It was just one of those games where everything went our way.  In game 4 of the floor hockey season, we would face a team for the 2nd time.  The first time around, we beat them 8-4; since then, we’ve only scored 5 goals in the past 2 games going 1-1.  Surely I would love to see 8 goals again, but how likely is that?  Well, it turns out pretty likely; it turned out that we would exceed that total.  It turned out that we would score almost the same number of goals in this game then we did in the previous 3 games.  Yes, the Golden Knights would light the lamp 12 times in a 12-0 rout.  Wowza.

Our little kids didn’t show up… all we had us the 6 bigger kids.  This would have been a perfect game for the little ones.  Considering all of our kids scored, and 5 of the 6 scored multiple goals, I’m sure they would have had their first goals of the year.  But nope…  it would be just 6 of us, with no substitutions.  The last time this happened we lost 4-1; I thought it was because we were getting tired.  It was our first game at the early 9am start time; maybe that factored into our outburst.  I mean, every single kid was on their A game.  Each of them was aggressive after the puck the whole game.  The result was never in question.  I told one of the refs that I was going to be calling off the dogs, but I could do only so much on this morning; these kids were foaming at the mouth looking to get their goals… haha.

I had the best 3 kids on the opposite side of the court in the 3rd period.  One in goalie, and the other one with my son playing defense; that should slow down the onslaught a bit… although that would pretty much make it impossible for the other team to avoid the shutout; what could I do?  I was chatting with the kid in goalie; he said he hated to be goalie.  I bet… he’d much rather be chasing the puck down.  Just then the puck came rolling his way; it landed right next to our net, which lead to a mad scramble.  It was their closest chance at a goal, but it didn’t happen.  We actually had a goal overturned in the 3rd period too, when the 6th kid on our team scored his 2nd goal making it unanimous multiple goal scorers.  I wasn’t going to argue up 10 goals…  And then there’s my son… he kept asking to go back on offense and I get telling him no.  So he took things into his own hands.  He flipped the puck to himself on defense, and shot the puck from the free throw line on the other side of the court; it went in!  It was the longest goal I had ever seen, and sure enough, he got his hat trick anyways… haha.

He was all over the place again in this one.  I started him in goalie; he was jumping on top of pucks like 10 feet from the net… haha.  I may have to consider putting one of the better kids in net vs the top team; we’ll see.  We’ll see next week when we face them for the 2nd time.  I told the kids I wanted them to play the same exact way next week.  If we did, I’m sure we’ll win.  Still, it would be nice if we could have saved some of these goals…  1st vs 2nd place game is next!

Dozen to zip is a pretty good beat down. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try, it is difficult to call the dogs off when the talent difference is that big. Glad my nephew got his hat trick on a long one from the defensive end, but it everyone was involved scoring multiple goals except one. Always good when all the kids are involved and scoring. Next week could be time for some revenge. Hopefully, the Knights can score more than 1 goal…keep it close and see what happens. Go Knights!
