Certainly NOT the Blackhawks yesterday. They got pasted by the Bruins during their Sunday matinee affair. Thankfully, I only caught the 1st period. I’m guessing Boston is still a little pissed about that Stanley Cup matchup 2 years ago…. I’ll take this trade off any day.
No, I’m not worrying about the Hawks, sorry. Although I wouldn’t be upset if they were to acquire another defenseman, I don’t think you need to dump one of our big guys to get one. I’m OK with trading Raanta if necessary to get a D man. Raanta should pull back at least a 2nd tier defenseman, and Darling with his new 2 year contract, is definitely a good backup to have. Although if you trade a goalie, then we’re committing to Crawford for the long term??? I like Crawford, but he’s making a lot of money, and if somebody has to go next year, that eliminates him from the discussion. So who does that mean goes then? Sharp, Hossa, Bickell? I’d like to keep our options open, but screw next year right now. We need to take advantage and win THIS year. Yes, Van Riemsdyk is coming back, but now Oduya is banged up…. regardless, if we need to pull the trigger for a defenseman, let’s do it.
Now what about that Oscar? It was a pretty good show last night, except my wife took me out 10-7 in our Oscar contest. Haven’t seen many of the movies discussed, but DID see Birdman; I’m glad it got the awards it did, and Keaton should have won best actor. But today, let’s flip it around a bit, and talk about some famous Oscars, and no, NOT the golden statue.
Oscar De La Hoya comes to mind first. I was never really a big fan, and cheered against him in most of his big fights. The most memorable was the De Lay Hoya Trinidad contest. Oscar had dominated him early in the fight, and then he began to run. He began to try and protect his big lead… letting Felix chase him all around the ring. It eventually cost him, in a controversial decision. By the way, which decision is NOT controversial in boxing? I ended up meeting him when I was out in LA. The charter school with his name was located in the same building that I worked. I snapped a shot of him and sent him to my wife, a big fan of course. He was really a small guy, but a nice guy nonetheless for letting me snap a picture of him, and even giving me a boxing pose too.

Oscar Robertson is another one that comes to mind. Mr Triple Double with 181 all time doesn’t seem to get enough credit when discussing the best NBA players of all time. His closest competition in the triple double game is Magic at 138. He even averaged a triple double one year! He does have only 1 NBA title, so maybe that hurts him, but still, the numbers don’t lie. This guy was all-time.
And what about that famous Chicago Oscar… Oscar Gamble. I’m not sure why I even remember him, since he was drafted before I was born. Maybe it was the team who drafted him, the Chicago Cubs back in 1969 that brings him to mind. Or, maybe it was the one of the other teams he played for, that same team he ended his career with, the Chicago White Sox. How many players played for both the Cubs and the Sox in their career? Ok, there’s a handful of them. How many players started their career with the Cubs and ended it with the Sox? Besides the famous Ron Santo, I don’t know, and I’m not looking it up, but I do know that Samardzija would fall in that category if he stays with the Sox.
Can’t think of any more Oscars with a Chicago twist, unless Oscar the Grouch counts. Growing up in a trash can on the south side, Oscar came to prominence when he was discovered by a talent scout when throwing out his trash, he discovered the green grouch eating some bologna from a half empty Oscar Mayer package… Haha, anyways… Happy Monday!

Crawford is expendable if he is looking for big money. Step right up at the goalie position with all the talent around them.
How about oscar pistorius, the blade runner who was the first double leg amputee to compete in the Olympics in 2012? A year later, he shot and killed his girlfriend and is basically getting away with it with no legs to stand on…hahaha…a little early morning humor!
