February 22, 2019: Finally 500

posted in: Blackhawks | 1

Yeah, so Thursday night after our tubing expedition, we ended up back in the restaurant at the ski resort, enjoying some good food and beverages.  Of course since we were up in Michigan, they had the Red Wings game on; fortunately for us, they were hosting the Blackhawks, who were trying to get to 500 for the first time in a long time.

I didn’t really have a good view of the TV; my son was able to see it better.  He updated me; felt pretty good about the Hawks winning this one as they held a nice lead.  Not a whole lot of Red Wings gear in the house; I think I saw one hat.  Of course I had my Blackhawks ski cap on plus a Hawks hoodie; nobody seemed to care… unless they just spit in my food without me knowing.  It’s been a while since the Wings have been good; their decline has kind of went hand in hand with the Hawks ascent.  Funny enough, that Hawks game I went to earlier this week, I was sitting next to a Wings fan.

He was from Detroit; glad to see he kept his hometown team.  Yet, he did have a Hawks hat on at the UC.  He said he was glad the Wings went to the East, so that he could root for the Hawks in the West.  I guess it is OK to like multiple teams?  I don’t know, that’s foreign to me, but I went with it.  I told him it sucked because now the only Original 6 Stanley Cup matchup would take place if the Hawks made it, which I guess now that I’m typing it, isn’t so bad because that means the Hawks would be in the finals.  Still, only 10 original six matchups for the Hawks per year barring a Stanley Cup Final does kind of suck… only 2 matchups with the Wings per year is kind of lame.  I went on to ask him about the Wings, and he said they’ve pretty much been in every game this year, but consistently lose by 1 goal.  He said they were saddled with some bad contracts, and had a bunch of really young guys and a bunch of old guys… no balance.  He said it would be a couple more years until they were good.  He did say he thought Yzerman would be back, this time as GM, as early as next year… we’ll see.

On this evening, the Wings made a run; when we walked back in the hotel room and turned the game on, it was a 1 goal game late in the 3rd.  My wife said she wanted it to go to OT.  Although I wanted the Hawks to win, I couldn’t argue with that thought; I too wanted to watch some more of the Hawks on this evening.  The Wings promptly scored.  The game went to OT.  Kane won it.  Perfect.

At that point, the Hawks were finally 500; they needed to go 17-4 to get to that 95 point total.  At 26-26-9, they were setup for a big weekend at the UC starting on Friday night vs the Avs and ending on Sunday afternoon vs the Stars.  Both of these teams were in the hunt for the Wild Card positions just as the Hawks.  A sweep of both would be huge.  Unfortunately, it would end up being a lost weekend…

Finally .500 is right! Man, it seemed like it took forever…guess I didn’t realize how far below the Bhawks had fallen. Glad they are back now. Sure, they had a 4-1 lead in this one that they let slip away, but thankfully, Kane saved them again on a sweet goal from Toews and Gust. It does suck that the Bhawks and wings only play twice a year. With all of the other 5 original six teams in the east, it does make it tough for a Cup finals, but I would be ok with the BHawks in a bunch of those. As for this year, back to .500 and back in the playoff hunt. Finish strong boys! A whole lot stronger than they would play in their next 2 games…
