February 21, 2023: Excitement on the Ice

Don’t look now, but do we actually have some excitement on the ice at the UC? The Hawks are winners of 3 straight, the last 2 in front of the faithful on Madison. With all the talk about Kane being moved, he has been putting on a show, including a “buzzer beater” in OT on Tuesday night that ended up not counting; that was some BS. Hawks still won, so all is well…. or is it? Is this “excitement” coming too soon? Will this mess up our plans to get Bedard with the #1 overall pick? What say you?

The Blackhawks haven’t completely blown it, yet. They have let Columbus and Anaheim slip ahead in the Bedard sweepstakes, both teams sitting at 41 points. The Hawks are still only 2 points out, with their 43 points at the bottom of the standings. I love to see wins; I hate to see losses. But… if the Bears have taught us anything this year, it’s that if you’re going to tank, do it right… all the way right… and get that #1 overall pick. There’s that argument I threw out there that says if you ain’t first, if you’re not winning it all, then it’s best to be dead last. Agree?

I know it’s counter intuitive to everything we know; it’s against the very fabric of our die hard fandom. Every time our team plays, we want them to win. We understand that we can’t win it all every year, but those wins matter. They boost us up when we need it. Seeing our team win a game should be savored. There have been times when my days were made or broke by how the Cubs did that day; pathetic? Maybe, but it’s true. Watching our teams compete and constantly get their heads bashed in, stacking up the losses, is a pretty demoralizing thing. Shit, I can’t even tell you how many Hawks games I actually watched this year; it’s rough. Coming off a Bears season where we got punched in the nuts every week, preceded by the Cubs taking a shit this summer, and now living with possibly the most frustrating Bulls team… yeah, it gets old. Watching the Hawks hold court in the basement of the NHL isn’t exactly what I’m looking forward to seeing.

This latest burst, lead by 88, has brought back some familiar feelings, but come on… we know those days are long gone, regardless of this 3 game winning streak. If we want “those days” back again, the quickest route to achieving that would be to get the #1 overall pick in the NHL draft, and score the next big thing Connor Bedard. It’s great to see Kane have some success; we know he still has some left in the tank. Is there enough in the tank to last until we get back to the playoffs? OR… should we let Patrick go, and use his talents where it matters, in the postseason, to try to get another Cup, even if it is wearing another sweater?

Kane has given us everything over his career; 3 Cups were so sweet. Is this his goodbye to us? If it is, then I don’t think we have too much to complain about. If he stays, then let’s hope he’s on the line with Bedard next year, as the Hawks parlay that excitement into some playoff hockey again. Still, great to see the UC rocking… Go Hawks! (but don’t do too well…haha)
