Ouch!  The news that Manny Machado decided to take his talents to San Diego hurt.  Forget about the fact that I wanted the Cubs to trade for him last year, the Sox were supposedly the front runners for most of the offseason.  Yet the longer it went on, the more likely it was not going to happen.  This has to feel like a kick in the nuts to the Sox.  I mean, didn’t they sign his cousin, his best friend, his uncle, his nephew, his sister’s boyfriend’s best friend, and practically his whole family to help sway his decision?  Well, guess what?  It’s all about the benjamins; we should have known that.

300 million guaranteed?!?  Thankfully Machado is a hard worker with a great work ethic who always hustles so his play and desire won’t be effected by all this money…  Maybe this big miss will turn out to be fortunate for the organization, instead of a huge flop.  Thing is, the Sox had the money.  They are one of the only teams that had the money to get both Machado and Harper, no?  Well, I guess the Reinsdorfs will earn a bit more interest on those funds before deciding who to spend it on next time around.  Or, maybe like with the Bulls, this is just the norm for ownership… missing out on the big free agents.  Frankly, I think Machado would have been better off going to the Sox than choosing to work on his tan in Southern California.  Climate may have played a role, you think?  Nothing we can do about that, but if someone doesn’t have the cojones to deal with the 4 seasons in the best city in the world, than good riddance, no?

See, you could look at this thing from two different angles.  You can be pissed as hell that the Sox didn’t get “their guy”, OR you can be happy that they didn’t get him… feeling like they dodged a bullet.  At the end of the day, if a guy doesn’t want to play for your team, then there is no need sweating it.  The other thing is though, that why didn’t the Sox guarantee the 300 million to get their guy, if that’s what it was going to take?  Why hold back another 20 or so million?  Again, to get your guy, you are most likely going to have to overpay.  They didn’t, and they didn’t get him.  Maybe they felt that the deal was the best they could do, and expected Machado to take it.  I’m sure we’ll hear all kinds of stories and theories now.  Spin control time!

When I said I wanted the Cubs to trade for him, I wanted the Cubs to sign him long term.  I actually preferred Machado over Harper.  But now we’re hearing the Cubs have no money…???  I’ll talk about that next.  But before we end this, maybe the Sox can take this shun and spin it into some motivation for this year.  And after all, now that the big shoe has fallen, they can go get a couple 2nd tier guys that should be able to help them as well.  Like any big signing, or any big miss, only time will tell how this turns out.  But one thing is for sure, it just wasn’t meant to be.

Not sure how sox fans feel about this one, but I was glad that the Cubs were not involved in trying to get this guy. Yes, he is young and talented, but he just seems to have a specific attitude and lack of hustle that rubs me the wrong way. No way in hell did I want the Cubs to pay $300 million. As for the sox, I heard that with incentives, machada could have made more money with the sox, like $320-340. So it seems that machada just wanted the easy, guaranteed money to keep playing in cali. Sure seemed like the sox brass were shocked that he didn’t sign with them. Maybe that makes it hurt even more. At the end of the day, with everything the sox did and offered, he did not want to be in Chicago. F him then. A strikeout for the sox no doubt, but in the end, it may be the best out they could have made. Time will tell, but I’m glad machada went where he did. Time for harper to sign somewhere so we can finally stop talking about these 2 clowns. GO CUBS GO!!!
