February 19, 2015: Wings and Things

Does anybody else miss playing the Red Wings?  I mean, I severely dislike them… you may even say hated them at some point, but Blackhawks Red Wings does have a nice ring to it.

With the realignment of the conferences, the Blackhawks are the only Original 6 team left in the Western Conference.  Perfect time for the Red Wings to run to the East, considering how much stronger the West is currently; OK maybe a little biased, but I think I’m right.  Still, it’s kind of unfair that we only get to see the Hawks play each of the other 5 only twice.  So when it happens, and more with the Red Wings than any other team, it’s special.  Ex-division rivals met this Wednesday on a frigid night in Chicago.  The result was not what we wanted.

As all these type of matchups are, there seemed to be a little extra pep in the step.  Once the chant “Detroit sucks” started, it was officially on.  According to NBC, it was the 729th regular season meeting of the 2 teams; Detroit holds a pretty big overall series lead.  They hung tough in this one, and got the Hawks in the shootout.

From what I saw, the Hawks were outplaying them; you see how much that matters sometimes.  We should be used to this over the past years.  Either you have the Hawks playing down to their competition, taking it easy, and letting one slip away OR you have the Hawks severely outplaying another team, yet still losing.  Of course, there are plenty of wins piled in there as well, which should continue to be the overall message.  After all, even with the “losses” on this home stand, the Hawks haven’t lost a game in regulation in 7 games, including a 2-0-3 stretch at home.  Yeah, it’s not exactly what everybody wanted to see, but 7 points through 5 games is not horrible either.

Still, is there something to worry about here with the Hawks?  I ask this question repeatedly, and the way I see it, the answer is still NO.  Of course, the Western Conference is tough, and maybe it’s too late to catch Nashville, but when all the chips are on the table, and everything is on the line, how can you NOT like the Hawks?  The skill level can challenge any team.  The experience and leadership are the best in the NHL.  The coaching, you could also say, is the best.  What else do you need?

They talked about adding a 4th defenseman via trade; I just think we’re looking for things.  There is always the Corey Crawford question, but I think that’s already been answered.  There is no reason to break this group of guys up at this point.  We all know there will be changes this offseason, but right now, I’m looking forward to one more run at the Stanley Cup with this current group.  As long as the Hawks bring their A game, I think we’ll be just fine.  Yes, maybe they did bring their A game last night, and yes, they still lost, but let’s stretch that out over a 7 game series.  The Hawks playing at their best are not going to lose a 7 game series to anybody; I don’t care how much Pekka Rinne stands on his head.

So thanks for another great game Detroit, and screw you for winning it.  Unfortunately, there will be no battles in the Western Conference playoffs for us any longer.  We have to hope you get through the East, which is a lot easier than our path, to meet in the Finals, for the Ultimate Blackhawks Red Wings series.  Sign me up for that.  Sign me up for any Original 6 Stanley Cup Finals.  Sign me up for any Stanley Cup Finals with the Blackhawks in there.  An Original Six series would be best, and Detroit would be the ultimate, but at the end of the day, the song remains the same; we take care of our own business, we play our best hockey, and everything else will take care of itself.  There are only 24 games remaining until the second season begins; get ready for another great ride.
