What does 300 mean to you?
First thing that comes up in a Google search is the movie 300. Definitely like that one. THIS… IS… SPARTA! Great flick… lots of blood and guts; can’t beat that, but let’s think sports here…
I think of the 300 win club in baseball. I actually remember Tom Seaver getting his 300th win… with the White Sox vs the…. Yankees. The Cubs had someone get a 300th win in their uniform too, with Greg Maddux vs the Giants. I remember his matchup against Roger Clemens back in 2005. It was the first National League matchup of 300 game winners in 113 years. There are only 24 members of this club, with the latest addition being Randy Johnson back in 2009. Who will be the next member of the 300 win club? That’s a good question. The closest is Tim Hudson at 214, but he ain’t going to get there. CC comes in at 208 wins, and at the age of 33, may have the best chance to do it next, but his injuries have really slowed him down. The highest win total under the age of 30 is Felix Hernandez at 125.. wow, that’s a long way off. With the monitoring of pitch counts and innings, and the increase of importance placed on the bullpen, this club may have had its last member…
300 yard passing games comes to mind next. Do you think of the Bears all-time leader in 300 yard passing games? It’s sad, but true, that guy is Jay Cutler. The record for most 300 yard passing games in NFL history??? Peyton Manning with 100 total regular season plus postseason. Jay’s 23 is waaaay off. The only one in the same stratosphere as Peyton is Drew Brees with 92 total. Brady is next at 73. Unfortunately, I’m guessing Aaron Rodgers will eventually eclipse this record. He’s only got 44, but has a ways to go in his career.

How about the 300 win club as a coach or manager? Coach Q recently recorded his 300th win as coach of the Blackhawks. Thibs is a year away as he sits at 238; he should be able to get that by the end of next season…. hopefully with the Bulls. As for the NFL, there are only 2 coaches with 300 wins. Don Shula with 328 and our own Papa Bear George Halas with 318. Belicheat at 211 has the best chance to join that pair, although he’s going to need about another 8 years…. Brady won’t be around that long. Meanwhile, John Fox is sitting at 126… Joe Maddon is well over 300 wins but has 0 with the Cubs, while Robin Ventura should be there in a couple years sitting at 152.
Hey, what about bowling? 300 being the score for a perfect game. Anybody get anywhere close to that? I don’t even think I broke 200 ever.
Well, for the purpose of today, 300 means the 300th edition of the blog. So 300 straight days posting a little something something. For me, 300 means laying the groundwork. 300 is just another number that I will speed past, but it’s nice to take notice too. The next milestone will be the 1 year anniversary, which will be coming in 65 days. Still have big plans for this little website. Hey, it shows up in google now if you type thelocalsportstalk (no spaces) in the search box. Baby steps.
Keep on reading… I’ll keep on writing. 300 days later, we’re still chugging along. Thanks for coming along on the ride…
