February 15, 2015: A Star Studded Affair

posted in: Bulls | 1

I wasn’t planning on watching the NBA All Star activities this weekend.  The only reason I would have watched it was to see Jimmy Butler in the Skills competition, but then he got hurt, so there went that.  Even if I DID want to watch it, with dinner plans set for Valentine’s Day evening, there was no way…. then plans changed.

We ended up changing dinner spots to the best pizza place in the world (free plug Pequods), and with over an hour wait ahead of us, we were plopped at the bar right in front of a TV.  I guess I’d be watching the All Star festivities after all.

I tried to stay open minded; just watch the events and try to enjoy it.  The Skills competition was OK.  They had to dribble through some cones, make a chest pass through this hole, drive down court to make a layup, then come back down court and hit a 3 point shot.  Patrick Beverley ended up winning, which was kind of cool considering he’s a Chicago boy.  I wasn’t overly impressed with the actual event though, but when you don’t like something, you should have another, better idea…or just quit your whining.  So, I did… quit my whining… at least in my out loud voice.  I took it for what it was, a fan event, and tried to enjoy it.

Next up was the 3 point competition.  I actually wanted to see this one; the lineup of shooters was pretty impressive.  I couldn’t hear the volume on the TV, so I didn’t really catch any changes to the competition, but did see some extra money balls.  Usually, it was 4 regular balls & 1 money ball at each of the 5 racks.  This time, it looked like each competitor got to choose where to put an entire RACK of moneyballs, on top of the 1 per rack.  So, instead of a possible 30 points, they could score 38 points… as far as I could figure out with no volume from the TV.  So, the record round of 25 by another person with a Chicago connection, Craig Hodges, could not really be broken, since there were more possible points.  So when Curry dropped 27 points in one round on his way to the championship, I of course, talked crap…

The slam dunk was up next.  If there was any competition I would talk trash about it, it would be this one.  After all, with the best dunker of all time being Michael Jordan, and the best slam dunk competition of all time being MJ vs Nique back in the Stadium in 88, nothing would really stack up.  The thing I don’t get was that you could miss a dunk, then another, then finally make it, and get a 50.  How the heck is that?  Also, try missing a dunk 3 times in a row… I could do that, and STILL pull a 30.  The judging is warped too.  I was talking so much crap, that my wife had to tell me to shut up.  I did, and actually, saw some pretty impressive dunks from a kid named Zack Lavine.  His 1st two dunks actually DID deserve a 50; I had to give credit where credit was due, especially for a guy who modeled his dunks after MJ, and actually came out with a 23 Jordan jersey.  So, he won… and I was OK with that.

So, after all was said and done, I enjoyed it… almost against my own will.  I guess I should just enjoy it for what it was, and try not to compare to past all star weekends, that in my mind, could never be touched.  That being said, I will NOT tune into the exhibition game tonight, even if it is Gasol vs Gasol.  I wouldn’t watch that even if I was plopped in front of a TV at a bar… I’d asked them to flip on the 40th anniversary of SNL… now THAT’S, a star studded affair in New York this weekend.  Time to watch.

Even though I was looking forward to the 3 point contest, I caught absolutely no nba action this weekend…sorry silver, time to make a change to all-star weekend to get me to view any of it!
